Bundesliga 1963-64

The first season of the new Bundesliga got under way on August 24, 1963. And things started out quickly: Dortmund's Timo Konietzka scored the first ever goal in the 1st minute of play against Bremen. The new league was an unqualified success, as most matches drew huge crowds, including one of over 85,000 in Berlin.

1.FC Köln became the first champion, basically controlling the table from the start: always in first, or at least tied for the top. The Rams were a combination of veterans, like World Cup star and captain Hans Schäfer, and young stars who would influence the league for years to come: Wolfgang Overath, Karl-Heinz Thielen and Wolfgang Weber. The Kölners also had the "honor" of receiving the first ever stadium ban. One of their fans assaulted the referee with the corner kick flag. Köln therefore played their match against Eintracht Braunschweig in Wuppertal's Stadion Am Zoo. Interestingly enough, Köln usually played in all-white, as the club president was an admirer of Real Madrid.

Somewhat of a surprise, MSV Duisburg (then still known just as Meidericher SV) ended as runner-up. The only star player was oldtimer and 1954 world Champ hero Helmut Rahn, who distinguished himself as the first player ever to get his ass tossed, in the 4th week.

Hamburg was supposed to challenge, led by 30 goal man Uwe Seeler, but after about 10 games, fell out of contention and disappeared. Defending champion Borussia Dortmund, which only two months before the start had defeated Köln in the the last playoff championship, was never much of a factor.

On the bottom, Münster put up a good fight, but Saarbrbrücken was hopeless, as it took 16 matches to even register the first win. Hertha Berlin drew huge crowds, but was only saved when Münster lost at home on the last day.
