Bundesliga 1964-65

The 2nd season saw the first "scandal": Hertha BSC was kicked out for "cheating". Apparently they violated the DFB Diktat against wage controls and were paying players under the table. (They certainly weren't getting much for their money.) This silly rule was undoubtedly designed to keep players in servitude, and Hertha, having bought at least a dozen established players, was obviously flaunting the regulations.

Werder Bremen was the surprise winner of the title, led by their stingy defense. Built around young superstar Horst Höttges, Max Lorenz, Sepp Piontek and national keeper Günter Bernard, the Bremers gave up less than a goal a game.

Defending champion Köln fought a fierce battle with Werder down the stretch, but were unable to win any of their last three matches.

On the bottom, legendary Schalke delivered a disgraceful performance, and finished dead last. Despite several "stars", the Blues would have to go down. But then the DFB came to their rescue: they expanded the league to 18 clubs. This also saved Karlsruhe. And since Berlin couldn't be without a club, the DFB promoted Tasmania to the top flight.

Attendance was superb, averaging 27,000 per match, a record that would last for many years. Newcomer sensation Hannover led the way, averaging over 40,000 in the Niedersachsen. Of course, Hertha BSC also drew massive crowds in Berlin, including 84,000 against Hamburg.

would take their place next season.
