GDR 1955
As befitting it's role as a Soviet puppet-state, the GDR slavishly imitated the USSR soccer season as well,
switching to a calendar year method, despite it being ill-suited to the central european status. For some reason
the DFV decided to hold a "transitional" tournament held over the summer/fall. This was undoubtedly to avoid riots
if soccer had closed down until 1956. Officially, the winner of the tournament would NOT be the GDR champion,
although most subsequent records list the winner as such. There would also be no relegation. However, to insure
hard-fought matches, the winner would get a coveted prize - a brand new team bus. For the DDR-Liga, I'm not sure
what the winner got, perhaps extra ration of toilet paper.
