2.Liga, Round 25

Leaders Hertha recovered from their crap Dresden performance and were in total control against Duisburg. The Zebras put in a decent effort, but Berlin was clearly better and rolled to an easy victory.

Köln had sustained pressure against Paderborn, who were defensively disciplined, but had no outlet to relieve the sustained assault. As a result their wall eventually showed cracks, and the hosts broke through for a clear win. After a horrible season start, coach Holger Stanislawski has turned things around, and Köln is putting massive pressure on Kaiserslautern for the Bundesliga promotion spot.

St.Pauli finally moved away from relegation fears with a nerve-wracking win over Regensburg. The Paulistas dominated but kept on making mistakes that kept Jahn in the match.

An impressive effort by FSV Frankfurt as they ripped Aalen to shreds. The Bornheimers had one of their best outings of the season. They’re within striking distance of the promotion playoff, although that’s probably too big a number. After a decent start, Aalen is finding life in the 2.Liga a bit hard. They’re probably still high enough to avoid falling into the relegation battles though.

A hard fought GDR derby, and Cottbus comes out on top over Union. Energie probably deserves the win, as they were down a man for almost an hour when Bittroff got tossed for Union’s penalty. The hosts showed more “energie” and willed themselves to a win, keeping an eye on the possibility for another return to the Bundesliga.

Crap match in Sandhausen, both sides deserving to lose. 1860 gets a goal to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Horrible match in Ingolstadt, but the Schanzer get the win against Bochum. Both clubs didn’t even look like 8th liga clubs in the first half, but improved somewhat in the 2nd. After Ingolstadt got the lead, they tried to catenaccio their way to victory, and they were ultimately successful, albeit much to the chagrin of their homefans, who obviously expected more. Bochum remains in relegation crisis.

A critical relegation battle and a hardfought Sachsen-derby. Aue came out on top deservedly because they just seemed to want it more. Dresden had their moments, but generally Erzgebirge was the pressing side, gave a greater physical effort and had greater control.

Monday’s match in Braunschweig was fairly even, with Kaiserslautern getting a critical point to stay ahead of Köln in 3rd

3.Liga, Round 29

Things remain tight at teh top, and the relegation zone clubs announced they’re not dead yet with points. The 3.Liga is the most exciting league in Germany at the moment.

Karlsruhe put in a decent display winning at Burghausen. The hosts gave a good effort, but in the end KSC’s superiority mertied the points.
A sold out Schüco-Arena witnessed the Westfalen derby between Bielefeld and Münster. It was a tense, entertaining affair, although lacking some of the technical kill one might expect for two good squads.

Osnabrück missed an opportunity to grab needed points, as they were unable to fight off pesky Chemnitz at home. The Purples keep a precarious hold on 2nd, but Bielefeld and Münster have a game in hand and are breathing down their neck.

Heidenheim perhaps lost some ground, but have to be somewhat happy, as they were staring a defeat at home to Wehen. But luckily the draw kings decided they wanted to continue their favorite result, so FCH managed to come back and grab a point.

Babelsberg got a huge away win at Aachen, and Darmstadt ignored the small crowd and recent squad infighting to do the same at Stuttgart B to get critical points. Not to be outdone, Dortmund B stunned Unterhaching to also get points. (This crowd was so small, it’s perhaps less than the average length of a line at a beer kiosk in the Signal-Iduna). Both Darmstadt and mini-Dortmund have makeup home matches on Tuesday, looking to pull even closer.

Erfurt got a critical win at Offenbach, to keep their head just above the zone. And in doing so they’ve dragged Offenbach done into the relegation mire. Certainly this is turning into a nightmare campaign for the Kickers. Halle was clearly the better side in a GDR derby with Rostock. Hansa needs to be careful not to get dragged into the relegation fight.

Total attendance this weekend was 77,488 (avg 7,749), with two sellouts, Bielefeld and Halle.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 24

(more details later)

Dortmund completely dominated against Hannover, and the 96ers were fortunate that they didn’t get whipped silly. The Neons were in control from the start, but wasted some chances, or were perhaps to enamored with their pretty football that they forgot that you’re supposed to score too.

Excellent performance by Schalke (first time you’re read those words in a while!) at Wolfsburg. The Blues dominated and leave deserved winner. Youngster Julian Draxler is emerging as a player to be watched, and perhaps the sale of Lewis Holtby to england won’t even be missed. Draxler has been around for a while, so it’s easy to forget he’s only 19. Things went so well even Huntelaar got on the scoresheet. For Wolfsburg, probably nothing to worry about, but they’ll want to keep an eye on Augsburg.

Great result for Augsburg at Bremen. Werder started slow, and the Fuggers took advantage to grab the lead. As Bremen began to wake up and press hard, they were a bit unfortunate, hitting the post twice. However the FCA defense managed to hold on and get critical points, giving them slight hope of moving up out of the relegation zone. Bremen probably should have had a draw, but have no one to blame but themselves.

In form Freiburg fully deserved their point at Nürnberg. If anything, they were the better team and FCN benefited from a rather dubious handball penalty. Der Club has been pretty solid, but could never really mount anything against the well organized and quicker Breisgauers.

Hamburg totally dominated against Greuther Fürth, but drops points. HSV attacked all day, but looked incompetant when it counted. The Gruether made their only attack count, and then fought hard. No talent, but lots of spirit, and on that basis, a point well earned.

It looked like a miserable loss. A somewhat dubious penalty, and visitors Stuttgart are in the lead. Leverkusen then dominated the match, but looked like banging their head against the wall in futility. Then a last gasp run got the Aspirins the deserved win.

On Sunday, Hoffenheim faced Bayern München, and the way things are going, you’d certainly expect a rout. As it turns out, the Hoppers actually played hard, perhaps their best performance of the year. Bayern was clearly superior, and eventually made that count, but the home side also benefited from some luck, so the score was kept minimal.

Fortuna Düsseldorf ended up throwing away the win against Mainz. Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel has been in the press a lot about how the refs have been cheating Mainz, but he should have no words about this one. Fortuna dominated and pressed, and it was only their wastefulness that prevented them from winning.

This weekend’s attendance was 384,452 (avg 42,717), sellouts in Frankfurt, Dortmund, Hoffenheim.

2.Liga, Round 24

Dresden got an abosultely crucial win against Leaders Hertha. Dynamo used the strong home support and clever positioning to neutralize the superior Berlin side. Fighting passionately for every ball, Dresden looked even the better side at times. However, they are incompetant in front of goal, so luckily a Hertha own goal ended up giving them the victory.

Kaiserslautern looked like crap against Bochum. It was impossible to guess that FCK is fighting for promotion, as they were actually outplayed by the visitors, who we all know are crap this season. In the end, perhaps Bochum was satisfied for a point away in their relegation battle, and FCK is fortunate they pulled the wool over their eyes.

1. FC Köln couldn’t take full advantage of Lautern’s crap performance. They dominated at FSV Frankfurt (the Bornheimers having a rare sellout), but wasted their chances, and when they were on target, FSV GK Klandt was in position. The home side fought hard, but were clearly inferior, but managed to take a late lead, which Köln eventually pegged back. Overall, given the fact that Köln
wasted too many opportunities, a deserved point for FSV on effort.

Union Berlin dominated from start to finish against Aue and move within potential striking distance of Kaiserslautern.

1860 dominated in a Bavarian derby against Ingolstadt, but as their wont, they dicked around and wasted a ton of chances. The Schanzer then counter-attacked late and kicked the Lions in the balls, stealing a point they didn’t deserve.

St.Pauli got critical points against relegation with a lucky win at Aalen. After a boring 1st half, hosts VfR took control and attacked furiously. Luck and poor finishing allowed Pauli to hold on, and then at the final whistle they were awarded a dubious penalty and completed their highway-robbery and grabbed all the points.

A weak match in Regensburg, but a critical relegation duel. Sandhausen was a bit more fortunate, and took their chances. Jahn had more of the play, but dicked around in front of goal and lose. This gives SVS some hope for getting back into safety, but it looks about over for Regensburg.

On Monday Duisburg played much better than usual, and Braunschweig ended up with a rare loss. The Zebras were compact, fighting well. Martin Exslager decided the match with a hammer shot from 16 meters. Braunschweig seemed stunned and was unable to mount a successful response, giving MSV desperately needed points…

Total attendance this round 140,911 (avg 15,657), with one sellout (Frankfurt) and an almost (Dresden).

3.Liga, Round 28

The races at both ends of the tables are hot. For the promotion spots, things are very tight, with five clubs having very legit shots. Positions are likely to change every week. At the bottom, a lot of postponed games are in the mix, so there could be some shifting as well.

The huge match was the regional derby in Münster, where Preußen upended leaders Osnabrück. The hero was Mehmet Kara, who opened with a hat-trick in 25 minutes. Kara was a winter transfer from Turkish SuperLig side Genclerbirligi and after a couple of subs, has now started two games. Result? 5 goals. With teh great start, Preussen obviously controlled the match, and VfL never really was able to get back in.

Karlsruhe had a hard time, but deservedly won against Offenbach, and have retaken the top spot.

Bielefeld was also a big winner, with a clear win at Babelsberg. Arminia has lots of injury problems, and obviously Bablesberg is desperate, but the visitors remained in control. The match was essentially decided after 50 minutes, when Babelsberg’s keeper got red carded for handling outside the box. With a goal lead, Arminia was able to bring home the bacon easily.

Heidenheim remains in the hunt with a solid win at troubled Rostock. Expect more rioting in Hansa-land…

From other matches, the most interesting note is that Wehen gets their 16th draw of the campaign.

On Sunday, a critical relegation battle, and Darmstadt blew it, losing to Halle. The 98ers were dominant in the 1st half, and should have added to their lead. The guests opened up in the 2nd and eventually equalized, and then cruelly stole the whole game with a goal in injury time. Halle is now pretty much safe, and Darmstadt is in dire straits. Perhaps they shouldn’t have brought in Mark Knopfler as head coach…

Total attendance this weekend was 55,081 (avg 6,120), with one sellout in Münster.
