3.Liga, Round 37: Leipzig up

RedBull Leipzig is going up. They kicked Saarbrücken’s ass and hold off Darmstadt. If fact the Rasenballsportler could actually win the title, as Heidenheim still has their promotion hangover and lost at Osnabrück. A large crowd helped celebrate a return for respectability that disappeared when VfB Leipzig got relegated from the 2.Liga in 1998.

The relegation battle is also almost over. Unterhaching is safe, their impressive stomping of Duisburg along with a decent goal difference pretty much assures their survival. It basically comes down to the fact that Elversberg has to win next week at Dortmund-II. They had a chance to gain points, but could not beat Chemnitz. Since Kiel also was held to a scoreless draw with BVB-II, that means that from a practical standpoint, a draw at Darmstadt next week assures Kiel’s survival. Seems unlikely, but So does an Elversberg victory.

With Darmstadt winning at Wehen in a regional Hessen derby, both Duisburg and Osnabrück have a chance at the 4th play DFB-Cup qualifier.
