Europaliga: Better results

At least the Bundesliga did OK in the Europaliga qualifiers, no Gladbach-like stinkers in the first leg. VfB Stuttgart beat Dynamo Moscow 2-0 in a somewhat ho-hum performance. 21,000 watched Stuttgart control the match, but it took two late strikes by Vedad Ibisevic to put VfB in solid position for the rematch in Moscow. From Dynamo, the most noticeable aspect was the return of Kevin Kuranyi to his old stomping grounds, as he had scored 40 goals in 99 matches for VfB, before moving to Schalke. He’s been playing in Russia since 2010.

Hannover 96 started well, with a wild 5-3 win at Slask Wroclaw. Some 25,000 in the Mijeski stadium watched a furious comeback by the Polish side, after being down 1-3. However the 96ers kept their nerves and scored a pair late to put them in the drivers seat. Goals for Hannover by Andreasen (2), Schlaudraff, Stindl and Schmiedebach. BTW, most Germans can’t find Wroclaw on the map, since they still insist on calling it Breslau…but it’s hopefully not irredentism anymore, just a frustration with the pronounciation.  “Vrotz-waff” just doesn’t seem right. But still, maybe they should just pronounce it “Rock-law” like the rest of us…I mean c’mon, it’s like it’s spelled “Raymond Luxury Yacht” but pronounced “Throat Warbler Mangrove”…
