WC 2014 Qualifying: Ho-hom start

The DFB squad started the World Cup Qualifying with a rather disappointing 3-0 win against the Faroe Islands. Disappointing in the sense that they should beat a team like this at least 6-0, and perhaps even double digits. On the other hand, the Faroese did pack the box and defended stoutly, and GK Gunnar Nielsen was brilliant, with several great saves. Overall, the German attackers (especially Klose, Müller and Khedira) wasted enough chances to win several matches in a rout.

Still, I suppose this is basically just a Pflichtsieg, and they got the required points.

Germany - Faroe Islands 3:0 (1:0)

        1:0 M. Götze (28., Hummels)

  1. I think that the following players also deserve a chance to represent Germany at the highest level:
Stefan Keissling, Marcel Schafer, Christian Pander, Christian Gentner, Mike Hanke, Jan Schlaudraff, Benedict Howedes, Julian Schieber, Ashkan Dejagah, Phillip Wollscheid, Gonzalo Castro, Heiko Westermann.

    • Actually, most of those players have already been capped. The question is whether they will get another chance. They’re all decent players, but with Germany having so many outstanding young players (don’t forget that Germany had the youngest squad in Euro 2012), most of the above players are done. Kiessling might get another shot, although in general he has been less than impressive in his caps. Hanke and Schlaudraff are nice guys to have around on your league team, but they’ve proven they’re not international quality. Howedes and possibly Westermann might get another shot.
