First win in France in…er…ages

It was only a friendly. But Germany traveled to France and came away with a victory, the first since 1940. Well, if you’re talking football, you have to back even further, although it was still in the Hitler era: 1935.

All kidding aside, Germany did defeat France 2-1 in a surprisingly well played match in the Stade de France in front of 75,000 fans. France Coach Didier Deschamps was able to field a full strength side, and especially Bayern man Frank Ribery was constantly causing problems. DFB coach Joachim Löw had a lot of no-shows (Schweinsteiger, Reus, Schmelzer, Götze and Klose) but still fielded a first rate side. Rene Adler has sealed his comeback as he got the GK nod over Manuel Neuer.

Overall, the match had lots of back and forth action, as both teams went for the win. Germany was perhaps a bit more fortunate, but the win seems fair. A good start for the new year…

  1. I felt positively surprised. Both teams fought and played all the 90 minutes, there were no hard fouls, a general spirit of enthusiasm seemed to dwell in the stadium… it was a test game, note that. I’ve seen A LOT worse test games.
Podolski, Gomez and Kroos do not fit in the system, it was clear to see. Löw might try a Barca version soon with rotating 3-4 ‘strikers’ instead of a single permanent CF – bad news for Mario #1, good news for #2. Adler showed a solid performance and a real likeable interview afterwards.
Winner of the day is Gündogan imho, he played very well and fitted into the system asap.
The French were good – hard to believe the’ve played crap only at the ZA world cup. Back on track I’d say.
