2.Liga, Round 7

Everybody sucks! That should be the battle cry for this week’s Zweite Liga.

Leaders Greuther Fürth were stunned at home by Bochum, and it was a deserved loss. The Bouchumers jumped out ot a quick lead and then hunkered down with a well organized defense. Greuther Fürth was totally incompetant and couldn’t mount anything serious, so they can’t complain about getting schooled. If they had been in the bundesliga, they probably would have lost 0-6 or something emnabrassing, leading the Fürther fans to burn down the stadium and hang the players from the nearest lamp-posts. The 2.Liga should be easier for “Bundesliga” clubs, but although you can be skimpy on skill, you really have to give effort, otherwise you could get slapped.

Union Berlin is the new leader, which is a bit of a surprise, since gthey hardly deserve it. In fact, they sucked at Ingolstadt, doing nothing, but getting a surprise goal. However the Schanzer are struggling mightily and really had no clue on what to do with the ball anyway, so Union made the goal standup for an away win and top-of-the-table. The Berliners should be happy with the points, but really need to play better if they don’t want to end up on the losing end after sucking like today.

Kaiserslautern had all the possession, but they had no clue how to break down their hosts. Sandhausen was content to kick the ball in any direction, and near the end, they actually kicked it in the net. The fans would have demanded their money back if it was in Kaiserslautern, but the villagers in Sandhausen were probably just thrilled at seeing a famous club, so they’re probably pretty happy, as SVS did fight to hold the match and were ultimately rewarded with everything.

1860 gave up a dreary draw at Aalen, mainly because they wasted some huge chances to win the match in Friedhelm Funkel’s debut as head coach.

Aue looked the better team for the whole match against Bielefeld, but were incompetant when it counted, and Arminia kicked them in the balls and robbed all the points.

St.Pauli was somewhat lucky to get the win, as FSV was the more engaged team, and certainly ran the hosts into the ground. But their finishing was crap, so Frankfurt ends up with nothing.

Düsseldorf had the edge, especially dominating the first period against Dresden, both clubs really struggling. Fortuna however figured they could rest on their laurels with the slim lead, and basically phoned it in for the 2nd period. Dynamo treid a little harder and managed to equalize late, getting a valuable point.

Paderborn looked the better side against Karlsruhe and deserved the win, and they desperately needed the points.

Monday Night saw 1. FC Köln’s most impressive 2.Liga performance since dropping down two season’s ago. The Goats faced Energie at Cottbus’ Stadion der Freundschaft, which is probably the most difficult venue in the 2.Liga. But Köln came out breathing fire, and it was the debut of last-minute signing Patrick Helmes that got things going: two touches, and a goal. Helmes has scored quite a lot of goals in both the Bundesliga and 2.Liga, but has been held back mostly by injury, although some bizarre coaching decisions at Wolfsburg under Felix Magath also contributed. In any case, a can score, and demonstrated that quickly, and then set up another. The Kölners ran rampant against a stunned Cottbus side, who never recovered.
