Things were beginning to lookup. Wuppertal was getting rolling in the Oberliga and had actually managed to move into first place. But then the wheels fell off with a couple of losses that dropped them back, and then the total disgrace this weekend. Playing at home at Rot-Weiss Oberhausen II…WSV lost 1-6. Yes, 1-6!!! Disgraceful!! And what makes it even worse: just a couple of weeks ago, WSV faced the A squad of Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, who play in the Regionalliga. This was the regional Niederrhein-Pokal, a qualifier for the DFB Cup. And WSV won 3-1!!! So you defeat the A team and then get killed by the scrubs.
Needless to say, WSV fans are quite upset, although the board doesn’t seem too perturbed. According to the plan, after the insolvency and forced relegation, this is simply a building year, and it’s not even clear if promotion is in the budget. By and large, financially things are on course, and attendance hasn’t been bad at all, considering it’s the 5th division and there aren’t any real attractive matchups. (Well, for the other clubs, they usually get a good turnout when WSV shows up). Most fans accept that relegation may not be “on the books”, but certainly expect performance on the field. So the next game or so before winterbreak are pretty important to everybody…
