Getting into the home stretch, things are pretty clear at this point. Heidenheim recovered from their loss last week, and got back on the win track. Leipzig dropped a point, but continue in 2nd. Darmstadt has crept closer. So those are the teams that will be in the promotion zone, the only remaining issue is who gets auto promotion and who goes to a playoff.
At the bottom, Saarbrücken looks dead and Burghausen is down to one lung, and they have pneumonia. Unterhaching is the other club in the zone, but their are several clubs that could fall. This is the only real significant race, although if you want some mini-excitement, 4th place is tight, which means an automatic spot in next year’s DFB-Cup Main round.
Heidenheim had problems with desperate Burghausen, and especially veteran Michael Thurk had huge chances, by count five golden opportunities. But he couldn’t hit the net, and FCH continued to bombard the Wacker goal. Finally they broke through for a deserved, albeit minimal win. That looks just enough to sink Burghausen.
Unterhaching has a new coach in Cristian Ziege. I remember the ex-international mostly for his dumb-ass mohawk hair in one forgettable World Cup, but he’s the man tasked to save the Hachingers. They did put up a good fight, getting a point against Leipzig. The RedBulls have to be careful, as Darmstadt is getting closer. The 98ers won again, with Dominik Stroh-Engel scoring in his 7th straight game and getting a tough win against desperate Saarbrücken, who now look finished.
Elversberg and Kiel battled to a scoreless draw in a relegation battle, But Stuttgart-II lost at home to Wehen, and thus things remain tight just above the drop zone.
