2.Liga, Round 17: Halfway mark

The top clash was in Ingolstadt, where the leaders hosted Kaiserslautern. The visitors had a edge in the 1st period, but the Schanzers came out strong in the 2nd half. They took the lead, and then when Younes got his ass tossed for a 2nd yellow, they basically overpowered Kaiserslautern. Ingolstadt was already assured the mythical “Herbstmeisterschaft”, but this does put a bit of a crown on top of it. FCK is obviously still in the hunt for promotion, but this one showed who’s boss in the 2.Liga.

The Rasenballsportler from Leipzig got a big away win at Greuther Fürth, who are going nowhere. The RedBulls played a solid, if not spectacular, match. The Greuther ran around aimlessly, underlining their futile campaign so far.

Braunschweig had the edge for most of match against Union, but the Berliners held on to save a precious away point.

Bochum fired Peter Neururer and showed up in Sandhausen with interim coach frank Heinemann. Nevertheless, they remained drab and uninspired. SVS didn’t have enough skill to riase their game much, so a snoozer was the result.

Erzgebirge Aue needed a result, and they were determined to get one against Heidenheim. The Veilchen dominated the game, created lots of good chances, but wasted most of them. They were therefore duly punished and had to concede a draw in what should have been a win.

The disaster continues at 1860. The Müncheners put in a good first period against Karlsruhe, but were disorganized and flat at the restart. KSC smelled blood and decided the match in about 10 minutes. A late Lions goal was worthless, and the fans get screwed once again.

FSV Frankfurt haven’t won at home all season, and Fortuna Düsseldorf made sure their hosts would remain hapless. It was a tight game, but Fortuna was generally holding the upper hand, and when they finally scored, the Bornheimers were in trouble. Their fate was sealed when Grifo missed a penalty, and Düsseldorf took all the points, leaving FSV in serious relegation danger.

Things continue to go from bad to worse for St.Pauli. The Hamburgers hosted Darmstadt, and pre-season you would have expected St.Pauli to be fiercely attacking all the way. But things have changed, as the Kiez-kickers have totally fallen apart, and their desperate situation was evidenced as they tried to grimly hold on defensively. Instead it was promoted Darmstadt that attacked and carried the match. They got a somewhat lucky goal at the end to rob the Paulistas of the draw they hoped for and keep them firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.

Nürnberg hardly impressed, but they got the job done in Aalen to steer into safer waters. They’re not too far behind that if they get their act together in the 2nd half of the season that they couldn’t make a run at promotion. Aalen didn’t have much on offer, but were perhaps a bit unfortunate to not grab a point. They remain in dire straits, but have shown that they’re not an easy opponent.

Total attendance 114,162 (avg 12,685). Not to good, but imagine if next year you have Dortmund, Bremen and Stuttgart in the league, you’d have massive numbers, I’d bet even FSV Frankfurt would sell out!
