WSV Blog: WSV Herbstmeister!

It hasn’t been a scintillating performance, but so far WSV has got the job done, or at least partially finished. The Wuppertalers started off indifferently, but eventually began to grind out points and have ended up leaders at the half-way mark. It will remain a difficult task however, as it’s “1st place or bust”, as only the champion is promoted. (Well actually, last season, the champion declined promotion for economic reasons, and FC Kray took their place as runner-up.) However glancing at eth top four contenders, it looks like any of them would gladly accept a promotion into the Regionalliga West. The 5th division Oberliga Niederrhein now takes a winterbreak until February.

WSV was unimpressive early, although the 4-0 away win at Velbert was fairly impressive. After some ho-hum results, they began to gather points, although they were hardly overwhelming the opposition. (An exception was a thumping 5-1 over defending champion Hönnepel-Niedermörmter). Marvin Ellmann and Dennis Schmidt have paced the WSV attack with 10 goals apiece.

From an attendance perspective, WSV is the clear leader, averaging almost 2,000 per home game. The league as a whole averages 385, ranging from Bocholt (528) to Oberhausen-II (156). It is therefore with a mixture of dread (because of “security”) and drool (“ka-ching” at the register) that other clubs await the arrivql of WSV. Average attendance when the Wuppertalers show up is a bit over 1,000, which is at least double what most clubs have been getting. Of course, it is pretty pathetic that WSV only draws some 2,000 for home games, but considering that they’ve sunk to the 5th division, maybe it’s fair.
