SpVgg Erkenschwick

Founded 1916 as Sportverein Erkenschwick, this scrappy little club has managed to hang on despite miniscule budget, and present problems for much bigger clubs. In 1922 they merged with Blau-Weiss Oer to become the present club. The most successful years were arguably immediately after WWII, when the club did well in west regional leagues. Horst Szymaniak played in the 1st team as a youth player, before transferring to Wuppertal and eventually playing 43 times for the German national squad.

In recent years, Erkenschwick has stood fast with basically an amateur status, despite the increasing costs of competing at the semi-professional level. In 1997, FC Schalke played Erkenschwick in a benefit game to help the club avoid bankruptcy.

Erkenschwick generally established themselves as a solid 3rd division club. They even made a couple appearances in the 2nd division, although this proved to be too difficult

By 1998-99 however, the magic was gone, and they could no longer hide the fact that they were a crap team. So they got the boot. The subsequent season was also a failure, as they were relegated again. In recent years, they've been kicking around in the 5th division, perhaps the lowest in club history.
