SpFr Hamborn 07

Founded in 1907, this little club has just under 500 members. The highpoint was probably the mid 1960s, when they played in the Regionalliga West, which was then the multi-league 2nd division. The last season was 1970-71, when they finished last. They were severely pummeled, but nevertheless fought hard every game. (Your editor remembers a rainy day in the Wuppertaler Zoo Stadion when the brave little Hamborners got rolled 8:1)

The actual roots started in 1903, when the Ball Club Hamborn was born. In 1911 they combined with SV Marxloh to form Sportfreunde Hamborn 07. (Where the "07" comes from, I'm not sure! Most likely Marxloh was founded that year). Most of the play was in the local leagues, with derbies against rivals such as Union Hamborn. (Hamborn was at the time an independent town, but has since been merged and is a district of Duisburg.)

The 1930s were among the highlights of Hamborn football. They were one of the stronger clubs in the Ruhr area, and one of the founders of the Gauliga Niederrhein, winning the title in 1942. During WW-II, there was also a temporary merger with local rivals Union Hamborn, as the KSG 07/Union Hamborn. However, this really only lasted a year, as the war made matches impossible, and the alliance was soon dissolved.

One claim to fame was is TV fame. Hamborn played St.Pauli in the DFB-Cup at the Millerntor, and won 4-3. This was the first live football broadcast on German TV.
