SpVgg Bayern Hof

Founded in 1910 as Ballspielclub Hof, in 1913 it was known as FC Britannia until it became FC Bayern shortly thereafter (thanks to WWI). The club was relatively successful in norhern Bavaria, but always in the shadow of powerhouse 1.FC Nurnberg.

The strongest period of the club was perhaps the 10 years from the mid 1960s to 1970s. Led by forward Bobby Breuer, Hof was a powerhouse in the 2nd division Regionalliga Sud, but by the end peetered out relegated from the 2.Liga Sud into the Bayernliga, where they've pretty much been stuck since. An interesting sidenote is that in 1969, Hof played Hapoel Nahariya, which is claimed to be the first meeting of a German and Israeli side.

In 2005, FC Bayern merged with SpVgg Hof. Although the latter did have a football section, they were never much of a force. They first started playing in 1893, but were only in the top regional flight a couple of seasons in the 1920s. In 1966 they made it to the Bayernliga, but were immediately relegated and vanished from football.

Stadium Grüne Au Capacity: 20,000 (2,135 seats)
Construction started in 1913, although they planted potatoes in the field in 1916 during WWI. FCB purchased the stadium outright in 1930, but in 1980 it was sold to the city. The Tribune was added in 1949. The attendance record is 19,100 for a promotion playoff against RW Essen in 1968.

Supporters Averaged 656 (2010), 1,114 (Bayernliga, 2008), 682 in 2004 (Oberliga). Obviously way down from the 70s.

Foes Franz Anders an ex-player and club president in the late 1960/70s, when FCB was at it's peak. He organized Hof's Israel-tour in 1969, the first German club to make a visit. (A documentary film, "08397B" has been made about this.) His property company is a club sponsor, and he's also written a club history, with insider information.
