In the 1930's, FC Idar was a regional powerhouse, and indeed, 3 of it's players went on to Hannover 96, which won the German title in 1938. Crowds of around 5,000 were fairly common as they played host to strong teams. However, after WWII, the decline set in. Despite the merger in 1971, by the mid seventies they had fallen all the way down to the local "A Klasse". In the late 1980s, several former players put together a stronger team, that began to move back up the ranks to repsectability. The stay in the 3rd division in 1999 showed that the team was overmatched, but they should remain a regional force to contend with in years to come.
