ESV Ingolstadt

DEFUNCT - R.I.P.

The club was founded in 1919 under the name FC Viktoria. In 1921, the soccer players from TV 1861 came over, and the club was renamed VfR Ingolstadt. Various clubs from the Ringsee district joined up in 1925. Success was modest; except for a couple of years in the Gauliga Bayern in the late 1930s, there was nothing of note.

After getting restarted in 1946, in 1951 the club again changed it's name, this time to ESV, except that the "E" stood for "Erster". Apparently by the end of 1953, the club became affiliated with the railways, and the "E" came to represent "Eisenbahner".

ESV was seeded into the Regionalliga in 1963, and for the most part bounced around in the upper levels of the Bavarian region. At the end of the 1970s, the highpoint, two 2.Liga years, passed without much success.

The club applied for insolvency in July 2004, and went into administration. The soccer players left for the newly founded club FC Ingolstadt 04, which also took the players from rival MTV Ingolstadt. There is a good chance that ESV will pull through bankruptcy in some form, but since all the soccer players left, who cares?
