1.FC Kleve 1.FC Kleve This club was founded in 2000 through a merger of SC Kleve 1863 and VfB Lohengrin 1903
Although the roots go back to 1863, the soccer section (which of course is the only worthwhile reason for existance) started in 1906 as FC Kleve and for some god-forsaken reason joined the gymnastics club TV Kleve 1863 in 1919. Luckily the soccer players left and formed their own independent club, SC Kleve, in 1926. They eventually became the flagship club of the Kleve soccer scene, although without too much sucess. By the 1960s, VfB had pretty much achieved parity, and there were plenty of derbies, usually at the Landesliga level, until the merger in 2000.
VfB Lohengrin Kleve was founded in 1903 and went through various mergers and acquisitions before the final merger with SC in 2000.
Generally speaking, the short term result of the merger has been successful, as 1.FCK obtained Oberliga status in 2003, undoubtedly the highest achievement.
