Phönix Lübeck

At one point in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phönix challenged VfB as the tp club in town. Now they've faded into obscurity.

The club was founded in 1903 as Lübecker BC 1903 and in 1924 they merged with the soccer section of the gymnastics club Lübecker Turnerschaft to become Lübecker BV Phönix. In 1971 the soccer section became independant.

In the early years, Phönix was considered more "respectable", since they concentrated on poofter sports like tennis and field hockey, while rivals VfB was known for soccer and boxing, and working class membership. Nevertheless, the club was always short of funds. Things didn't start looking up until some field success in the late 1950s brought in more interest and money.
