SpFr Saarbrücken

Sportfreunde are the number 3 in town, although at times they've threatened Saar 05 for the second spot.

Gymnasts started the sports craze in Burbach in 1876, but the club decently only claims a start of 1905 - when the soccer section of TV Burbach was formed. The soccer players left in 1924 to become Sportfreunde Saarbrücken in what was called a "cleansing seperation". The club didn't do much on the field, although they had a couple of seasons in the Gauliga Südwest in the 1930s.

By the late 1950s, SpFr had established itself in the old Oberliga Südwest, but after a couple of ho-hum seasons in the new Regionalliga, they opted for voluntary relegation in 1965 due to lack of funds. Since then, they've been kicking around in various Saarland amateur leagues.
