Saar 05 Saarbrücken

Founded in 1905, this club is mainly known for it's track and field division, which is one of Germany's strongest. Unfortunately this perversion has prevented the soccer squad from receiving the necessary backing and recognition to become respectable. There were a couple Gauliga appearances in the 1930s, but they disappeared into obscurity for the rest of the pre-war period.

After being runner up in the first independent Saarlandliga in 1948, Saar05 competed a couple more years in the joke league, before rejoining German competition. The 1950s saw some relative success as Saar05 played in the Oberliga Südwest. They competed for 12 years, finishing 9th eight times. They were then seeded into the new Regionalliga in 1963. They managed to kick around until the early 1970s, and then were reduced to local Saarland competition.

Financial problems - the main sponsor left - led to a collapse on the field as well. Relegation from the Verbandsliga was inevitable. 2004 saw the lowest point in Saar05 history, as they now competed in the 6th division. Unfortunately, things got worse. Although on the field things weren't too bad, the club barely avoided being wound up. However, insolvency led the Saarland Football Federation to stop play half-way through the season, annull their results, and dump their ass out of the Landesliga.
