1.FC Union Solingen

This club was "reconstituted" in 1990, based on an earlier Union Solingen that was founded back in 1897. With some 600 members, Solingen has managed to play are fairly strong role in the local scene, getting up to 2.Liga levels.

The orginal club was based on mergers with various clubs in the Ohligs area, such as OFC 06, VfR Ohligs, Walder Ballspielverein and BV Adler Ohligs. In 1949, is was refounded as Union Ohligs and began to play professionally in the 2nd division. With a merger with VfL Wald in 1973, they became SG Union Solingen. Success would come quickly, and the most successful period of Solingen soccer started. Union gained promotion into the 2.Liga, and played for some 15 years. However, by the end, they were relegated and exhausted financially, leading to bankruptcy. In 1990, they threw in the towel and were refounded as 1.FC Union Solingen

Financial success however has been elusive. In 1999, the club went through bankruptcy once again. They eventually came out of administration and continued. Again in 2007, they initialized bankruptcy proceedings, but were able to avoid going into administration.
