This club has basically played 2nd fiddle to rivals Rot-Weiss. The only moment of glory was in 1959, when they stunned the world to win the DFB Cup. Since then, they went back to sleep.
Schwarz-Weiss clearly was behind Rot-Weiss, usually finishing in the middle or bottom half of the league throughout the 1950s-1960s. The win of the DFB Cup in 1959 made them the first 2nd division club to do so. Along the way to the title, they defeated rivals RWE 1-0, Hertha BSC (6-3 in Berlin) and Hamburger SV 2-1. In the finals, they destroyed Borussia Neunkirchen 5-2. This team of no-names then disappeared into obscurity.
After some decent runs in the mid 1970s, the club settled in as a perennial regional team, first in the 3rd, then in the 4th division.

Rot-Weiss Essen, obviously. Although often clouded in political terms
(i.e. the "reds" were leftists and the "blacks" rightists, in reality
there isn't much difference. Most likely more of a north (RWE) vs. south
(SWE) city divide.) | Heroes |
