3.Liga, Round 38, FINAL: Haching down

Round 38, May 23

The final round of the 3.Liga had only one question left, and Unterhaching answered with a Bronx-cheer and “claim” the final relegation spot. The mini-Münch(en)kins needed a win on the road at Erfurt, which wasn’t an impossible task, considering that RWE had lost something like 9/10. And Hansa Rostock cooperated by losing at Dresden. However Haching didn’t seem like they were really prepared. Injuries and other factors meant they actually had to start six U19 players, and it took a while to get going. After Erfurt took the lead, they really did nothing until the final 15 minutes, when they created several decent chances. But they failed and get relegated. Probably a good thing for the 3.Liga finances, since Rostock is a big draw and the relegated sides are largely non-interesting. Hansa was at Dresden for a big eastern derby, and despite Dynamo needing nothing, it was hotly contested. Rostock came out strong but started winding down as the match progressed. But since news from Erfurt indicated they would stay up regardless, they probably weren’t too worried.

Mainz-II got a draw against Chemnitz to secure their status.

Bielefeld secured promotion as 3.Liga champion as they won away to Großaspach. Arminia probably should have wrapped things up a couple of weeks ago, but dicked around. Still, overall they deserve the title as the most consistent side, and are back on their elevator ride. The Bavarian side had a strong middle run to secure their stay in the 3.Liga.

Duisburg had some chances to take the title if Bielefeld slipped up, but the Zebras were pretty flat at Wehen and ended up losing. Not that they care too much, since they gained promotion.

Kiel’s warm up for the promotion playoff went south, as they couldn’t break down a disciplined Stuttgarter Kickers defense, and then got caught with their pants down on counters.

Dortmund-II was already relegated by still went out and got a win at Münster, who limped to the finish line. BVB might still have a chance to stay up, although it would be a bit sleazy. 2.Liga relegated side VfR Aalen is going to have serious problems getting an operating license for the 3.Liga, so they could get dumped straight into the Regionalliga, in which case BVB would get a reprieve.

Jahn regensburg said goodbye and biatch-slapped Fortuna Köln. It was an easy win, as the guests were just phoning it in. Jahn never got rolling this season, so the last place finish is warranted.
