BUNDESLIGA, Round 34, FINAL: HSV has another chance, shock for Freiburg

Round 34, May 23

Drama in the last round as the relegation battles feature great escapes and tears.

Hamburger SV was a winner as they still are alive, and will face the 2.Liga 3rd place finisher Karlsruhe in a playoff. Last year they did the same, barely surviving over Greuther Fürth.

The big loser was Freiburg. The Briesgauer travelled to hannover needing only a draw. In reality, the way things turned out, the 96ers could have settled for a point as well. But they didn’t know that at the start, and immediately jumped out to the lead. Things went back and forth until a late own goal sealed SCF’s fate. Nils Petersen pulled one back in injury time, but it wasn;t enough and SCF takes the bitter road down.

Stuttgart was the big winner, and Daniel Ginczek the hero keeping them in the Bundesliga. In the match at Paderborn, it was clear that the loser was going down, and Paderborn jumpe first getting the goal that kept hope alive. Stuttgart equalized, and the rest of the match was a tense battle, since a draw meant both were finished. In the end, VfB grabbed the win and a miracle escape.

Hertha lost in Hoffenheim, but events made the result moot. Berlin survives barely, mainly because Hannover and Freiburg didn’t draw.

Borussia Dortmund had an entertaining match against Bremen, as the fans said goodbye to Sebastian Kehl and coach Jürgen Klopp. The Neons attacked like in old times, Bremen countered like they have done most of the season.

Bayern München had an easy time winning against Mainz, neither having anything to play for.

Gladbach laid an egg against Augsburg. They had already done the hard work for Champions League, and were pretty flat. The Fuggers needed a result to ensure their Euroliga status, and went out and grabbed it. Despite trailing, the visitors came to life when Gladbach’s Nordveit got his ass tossed after an hour, and the home side lost the lead and the match.

Big crowds for the final week of action:
Total attendance 461,527 (avg 51,281), 99.8% capacity. Only match not a sellout in Köln!
