3.Liga, Round 25

Leaders Karlsruhe showed they are serious about staying on top, and they ripped Aachen to shreds away. On Sunday, Osnabrück kept pace with a hard fouht win over Stuttgart.

Bielefeld remained on track as they strangled Erfurt.

Heidenheim is back in the promotion race, as they dumped Preußen Münster to join the fray.
By and large the hosts outplayed their guests, and they deserved their win. FCH had been sliding along, but they’ve recently put things back together and look serious about challenging.

A weak relegation eastern duel, but Halle’s win over Babelsberg gives a bit of breathing room for HFC. The Potsdamers didn’t help themselves as Matthias Kühne got his ass tossed right after the restart.

There are a couple of makeup games scheduled for midweek, the biggest is the critical relegation battle as Darmstadt hosts Babelsberg. The 98ers desperately need a win, else they lose virtually all hope.

Kickers Offenbach didn’t play, but they fired head coach Ari van Lent midweek. Despite a great run in the DFB-Cup, Offenbach has basically stunk in league, where they were expected (by management and fans) to contend for promotion.

First win in France in…er…ages

It was only a friendly. But Germany traveled to France and came away with a victory, the first since 1940. Well, if you’re talking football, you have to back even further, although it was still in the Hitler era: 1935.

All kidding aside, Germany did defeat France 2-1 in a surprisingly well played match in the Stade de France in front of 75,000 fans. France Coach Didier Deschamps was able to field a full strength side, and especially Bayern man Frank Ribery was constantly causing problems. DFB coach Joachim Löw had a lot of no-shows (Schweinsteiger, Reus, Schmelzer, Götze and Klose) but still fielded a first rate side. Rene Adler has sealed his comeback as he got the GK nod over Manuel Neuer.

Overall, the match had lots of back and forth action, as both teams went for the win. Germany was perhaps a bit more fortunate, but the win seems fair. A good start for the new year…

BUNDESLIGA, Round 20

Leaders Bayern continue to rape and pillage their way through the Bundesliga. Although Dortmund seems in form and is now officially leading the chasing pack, the deficit looks too great to do anything.

Mainz tried hard, and managed to hold off Bayern for a half, but a late goal by Thomas Müller, who caught Kroos’ pass and dribbled around GK Wetklo pretty much ended things. The Carnival kings tried to open up after the restart, but were ruthlessly bitch-slapped by a Mandzukic double, and it was another ho-hum Bayern win.

Dortmund beat down Leverkusen in a pulsating match. The Neons jumped all over the Aspirins at the start, and looked to have knocked out the Alka-Seltzers. But Leverkusen didn’t give up and launched fierce assaults on the Dortmund goal. They finally squared the match, but they weren’t even done celebrating when the outstanding Lewandowski kicked them in the balls and gave Dortmund bacl the lead. “Kuba” Blaszczykowski could have nailed the coffin shut, but his second penalty was saved by Jay Leno. OK, Bernd :) Bayer launched some desperate last gap assaults, but was unable to save a point. The Neons move into 2nd, but with a 12 point deficit, I don’t see how they catch Bayern.

A hard fought, exciting match in Hamburg. Frankfurt remains the surprise of the season, and put in a superb effort. They dominated the first half, and new signing Srdjan Lakic already paid dividends with a double and excellent play. Lakic has bounced around quite a bit, but maybe he’s found a home – and maybe Eintracht have found a forward that can score. HSV was stunned, but reacted with furious attacks in the 2nd half, but Frankfurt’s defense was solid, so they get a deserved win.

Schalke disgraced themselves in losing to Greuther Fürth. The Blues dominated the whole match, but wasted their chances left and right. The visitors were just happy to hold on, but when new Schalke signing Michel Bastos scored just after half, it looked like game-set-match. But a funny thing happened, as the Clovers-leafs immediately equalized. From then on, both sides had chances. It looked like a draw, but in the last second gasp, Djurjic crossed, Azemi shot, Hildebrand made a nice save – and Djurjic headed in the rebound from an offisdes position. But the ref correctly felt that the Schalkers deserved to be punished for their crap play and let the goal stand. A huge win for Fürth and their coach, ex-Schalke hero Mike Büskens. They’re going down, but at least they try.

Werder has been somewhat lame recently, but changed their tune in a northern derby with Hannover. Bremen dominated from the start, creating lots of chances, but wasted them all. However the 96ers were too constipated to do anything, and a late double by Bayern-loanee Nils Petersen decided the match. Petersen is unlikely to ever break into bayern’s lineup, so Werder could probably do themselves a favor by signing the ex-Cottbus man.

An important win for Nürnberg, stopping Gladbach’s decent form (9 straight undefeated matches in Cup and league). Coach Wiesinger gets his first win, and der Club looked much better. FCN fought hard, especially in the 1st half. Gladbach took over as the match went on, but was unable to stave off defeat.

Augsburg got a result at Wolfsburg. The VWs dominated, but Fugger GK Alex manninger was brilliant, and he saved a point for FCA. The Wolfies should have won, but there you have it…

Hoffenheim completed a nice weekend for soon-to-be-relegated clubs as they finally won, beating in form Freiburg. Ex-Tottenham GK Heruelho Gomes made his debut, as Time Wiese – voted “worst keeper in the league” was dropped from the squad. He was decent, nothing outstanding, but the Hoppers showed some spirit that has been sadly lacking all season, despite an early deficit. It was a fairly intense match, although things drizzled off in the later stages. Still, 9 winless match streak is broken, although probably too late for the Hoppers.

A double by Aussie Robbie Kruse put Düsseldorf on the right track against Stuttgart. The visitors were asleep in the 1st half, and Fortuna put them down. Although they tried hard to comeback, the second half proved too ragged, and Stuttgart gets stuck with a deserved loss. Fortuna needed the points to keep distance on relegation, and move closer to surviving their first year back from the wilderness.

Total attendance was 347,219 (avg 38,580), with three sold out matches. Not bad for February in Germany…

2.Liga, Round 20

The Zweite Liga was the last to restart after winterbreak, but the trends seem to be continuing. Braunschweig is going up because they are battle hardened squad that can grind out the points. Hertha is going up because they’ve figured things out, and well, there has to be a Berlin club in the Bundesliga. Not having one? That would be incredibly dumb, I mean, that’s like saying the NFL would have no team in Los Angeles!

Braunschweig had no problems with a lame Paderborn side, easily steering home the points. Hertha went nuts in Regensburg, at least in the 2nd half, kikcing their host in the balls and romping home in outrageous fashion, Jahn being somewhat over-killed.

Union Berlin has quietly moved into shouting range, and had no trouble disposing of Sandhausen. Not sure if the Berliners can mount a serious challenge, but they’re not too far off, and that’s all that matters in the 2.Liga.

Köln got off to a decent start, with a hard fought win over Aue. The home side deserved the win, but it looked to peter out to a draw as Kevin Pezzoni got sweet revenge by squaring the match late. As you might recall, Pezzoni was chased out of town by wanker Köln fans death threats, eventually signing with Aue. Still, a good win for Köln, who are probably too far back to try and get back in things, but look to recover from their hangover.

Intense match in Hamburg, but the Pauli and Energie keepers were sharp, and neither side had an edge.

Bochum looks to have done some homework in the winterbreak, and looked sprite rather than the listless bums from pre-winter. They grabbed the lead twice, but homeside Aalen has had a surprisingly strong campaign, and were able to fight back.

Dresden was perhaps fortunate to get a draw against Duisburg in a battle of troubled teams. Dynamo started out brightly, but as the match wore on, the Zebras dominated and it was only GK Ben Kirsten that kept the homeside from losing.

Ingolstadt was the more fortunate side in grabbing the win in Frankfurt. FSV coach Benno Möhlmann completed his 1,000th match as a professional, I think around 450 as a player, and some 550 as a head coach. (Next in line is Bayern’s Jupp Heynckes, who is at 996…)

Kaiserslautern got a somewhat lucky win against 1860 with a late goal. The hosts often looked the better team, but FCK made their chance count. This was important, as the club shows they are still serious about wanting “up”…they remain with a solid 5 point cushion for the playoff opportunity. For 1860, usual crap, but in play and result.

3.Liga, Round 24

None of the top teams could win, but we have a new leader. Karlsruhe has recovered from their horrible start to seize the leadership, despite a scoreless draw in a top table clash with Bielefeld. Arminia therby stops KSC’s 10 game win streak. Erstwhile frontrunners Osnabrück were shocked in losing at Erfurt. VfL had the best road record, and they took the lead right at the start, but were then beaten down by a fighting RWE squad. Münster missed a chance to go top, but they couldn’t be the draw kings of Wehen.

The Stuttgart derby ended with a dominant 1st half by the Kickers, who gave themselves some critical points in the relegation tussle. Halle got a huge road win at unterhaching, pretty much dropping the mini-Münchenkins out of the promotion race. Heidenheim’s win however at struggling Babelsberg means that they are back in the hunt.
