Halle managed to win the derby against Chemnitz despite having two players tossed out near the end of the match. Darmstadt is gthreatening to move into contention after winning at Saarbrücken.

2.Liga, Round 9

1. FC Köln continued their good run with a win at Aalen. They were in control, but neglected to finish off their hosts. As a result, they had some nervous moments in the end, as Aalen threw everything at them.

Cottbus stopped their downward spiral with a hard fought win against Bielefeld. Energie seemed to have everything under control, but Arminia came roaring back. In the end, Cottbus got a second wind in the home stretch and pulled out a needed win.

Kaiserslautern dominated a once again lame 1860. Although it took a while, FCK pressure was rewarded and they romped over the toothless Lions.

Aue bitch-slapped Karlsruhe silly in a dominant performance. KSC didn’t seem like they even wanted to be there.

Union put in a solid performance in getting the points at struggling Paderborn. Ex-SCP forward Soren Brandy hit a double, and although the result was perhaps too high, Union deserved the win.

Bochum disgraced themselves, losing at Sandhausen. In reality, SVS could have gotten more, as they were up a man and missed a penalty.

St Pauli did zero, but it was enough to nail Ingolstadt. The Schanzer look pretty crap and headed for relegation.

On Monday, Greuther Fürth easily bitch-slapped Dresden and moved back into 1st.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 7

Dortmund showed who was boss right at the start against Freiburg, who seem to have completely fallen off the wagon. The Neons might have struggled in this match last season, but their continual pressure bore fruit and they broke through. Frieburg didn’t help themselves by Diagne getting red and a penalty just before the half. In the 2nd period, no chance for the visitors.

Bayern had a difficult time with Wolfsburg, as the VWs played solid defense and absorbed Bayern’s ball control. In the end the hosts broke through for a largely deserved win, but a relatively good performance for Wolfsburg, which hasn’t been noted for defensive prowess.

Leverkusen kept pace with the leaders, and easily handled Hannover. They make up the triumvirate that has already opened up a gap with the rest of the league. From what the 96ers showed, the Aspirins aren’t going to be too worried about Hannover catching up. As far as the match itself, it was pretty ho-hum, decided at half, and the hosts coasted.

Wild shootout in Hoffenheim, where Schalke seemed to have the game well under control with a fine 1st half performance. However the hosts came out blazing and launched furious attacks after the restart, erasing the deficit. Both teams went for the win, and it seems like a draw is the correct result.

Augsburg had most of the play as they pressed in front of enthusiastic home crowd, but Gladbach was clever and had the Fuggers chasing their tails. In the end FCA got the deserved goal, and a fair result.

Mainz started brighly, with midfielder Nicolai Müller notching his 7th goal. But Mainz has sucked and their lameness continued. This loss in Berlin is the first time in Thomas Tuchel’s regime that they’ve dropped four in a row. Hertha made adjsutments at halftime, and bringing on ex-Mainzer Sami Allagui proved to be a stroke of genius by coach Jos Luhukay. The much travelled forward (BV Büderich, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Alemania Aachen, RSC Anderlect, KSV Roeselare, Carl Zeiss Jena, Spvgg Greuther Fürth, Mainz, now Hertha) knocked in a pair to set Berlin on the way to a deserved victory.

Frankfurt dominated against HSV, but they have nobody to blame that they didn’t win. Instead, whenever they got the lead, they dicked around and allowed Hamburg to come back. New coach Bert Van Maarwijk couldn’t have been too happy with HSV’s quality, but he’ll love the outcome, as he’s all about getting the result.

Stuttgart got just what the doctor ordered to get better: a nice dose of Braunschweig. It was a clever performance, something VfB hasn’t been known for recently. They let the hosts run around and pretend they were in charge. Then they got bored and just kicked Braunschweig in the balls a few times and took all the points.

Finally, yet another wild shootout in Bremen. Nürnberg is still looking for their first win, but they showed great spirit in fighting back and getting a point. Werder had a chance to to blow open the game early, but basically they don’t know what they’re doing. So as a result, werder continues unable to beat Nürnberg, something like five straight tries.

Total attendance was 390,066 (avg 43,352), sellouts in Dortmund and München

DFB Pokal, 2nd round

Midweek was the 2nd main round of the Cup, but there really weren’t any major upsets. In fact, most of the games were even ho-hum on the interest scale.

Defending Cup-holder Bayern München had an easy time whacking Hannover. What is worth mentioning here is that this was a rare occasion where they didn’t sell out the stadium. Even more so since a day before the Allianz-Arena *was* sold out as 1860 faced off against Dortmund. 1860 put up a fight, but basically hunkered down from the start and was dominated by the Neons. Guess they were hoping for penalties, and they finally got their wish – but not the way they intended, as one was called against them.

Darmstadt put up a great fight against Schalke, but was eventually overpowered by superior talent. One side item was that oldie Gerald Asamoah came on for Schalke in the 90th minute for a cameo.

HSV didn’t exactly perform against Greuther Fürth, getting a somewhat lucky win. Ex-Hamburg favorite Rudolfo Cardoso is filling in as head coach until presumably Burt Van Maarwijk signs on.

Interesting match in Frankfurt, but not big Frankfurt, which easily handled Bochum. FSV was greeted by the usual minimal crowd and lost against Ingolstadt. What makes it interesting wasn’t what was on the field (the match sucked) but that on Sunday the same teams met in a 2.Liga clash and FSV thumped the Schanzer.

A tiny upset in that 1. FC Köln won at Mainz. Not too shocking, since Köln is a bigger club, but the fact is they’re in the 2.Liga, while Mainz is a Bundesligist. However this was somewhat unexpected, as despite the recent lame form of the hosts, Köln hadn’t won in Mainz since 1962.

For the remaining teams, 10 x Bundesliga, 5 x 2.Liga and a single 3.Liga club (Saarbrücken). As the only remaining “lower” league club, FCS will automatically host the next round, and I’m sure they’re hoping for an attractive clash to fill the coffers.

3.Liga, Round 10

The big winner this week was Heidenheim, who strengthened their hold at the top with a hard fought win over desperate Münster. They have no opened a slight lead at the top, and more importantly, a useful gap from the non-promotion spots. Meanwhile Wehen went down in flames in another village, Elversberg.

The top match of the week was Osnabrück hosting moneyed RedBull. The Leipzigers grabbed the lead in a well played, hard-fought match. However Osnabrück came storming back in a dominant 2nd period to wrest control of the match and get the win.
Erfurt was stopped at Stuttgart II, missing a chance to vault up into promotion.

The most surprising result was perhaps Darmstadt’s annihilation of Rostock. The hosts came out storming, catching the favored visitors off guard. Before long Kucukovic got his ass red-carded, and Rostock’s plan fell apart, and they drew into a defensive shell. Pretty lame shell as Darmstadt attacked furiously and ripped it open. The star was forward Domink Stroh-Engel, who banged in four goals. This is a truly embarassing defeat for Hansa, and I would not want to be on the train (or station) when they arrive back in Rostock. Great result for Darmstadt, which could use this a launch pad into promotion contention. They were relegated last season, but since Offenbach didn’t know how to operate a cash register, got saved. Sometimes, you take advantage of second chances, and so far this season, the 98ers are doing just that.

Burghausen got an unlikely away win at Unterhaching to finally get rid of the goose egg in the win column. With others continuing to suck, perhaps Wacker could climb back into the salvation zone.

Total attendance was 43,544 (avg 4,354)

2.Liga, Round 8

Greuther Fürth is back on top as they deleivered a beat-down in the showdown in Berlin to erstwhile leaders Union. It was an exciting match where both teams were going all out for the win, but the Greuther were just a bit more cold-blooded in front of goal.

Köln and Kaiserslautern met in a mega match, and the Köln faithful showed that they’re still behind the club despite sucking for last season after relegation. A sold-out stadium pushed the hosts forward, but Lautern was solid enough in defense.

Finally a solid performance by 1860, as Friedhelm Funkel made his home debut as head coach. The Lions dominated against Aue and easily get the points.

Bochum is still not ready for prime-time. They dominated the whole match against Aalen, but wasted chances left and right. Aalen had about two opportunities, but took them, kicking Bochum in the balls and stealing all 3 points. Bochum has nobody to blame but themselves, and if their fans decided to riot, it might be acceptable.

Bielefeld had a hard time against Sandhausen , who after falling behind opened up and pressed Arminia back. The hosts missed some chances to finish off the game, and instead SVS cut the lead, which meant anxious minutes for the increasing nervous home fans. But in the end a win, and a solid challenger status.

FSV dominated against hapless Ingolstadt, which is in crisis. The visiting Schanzer actually started out OK, but once they fell behind they were overrun by the aggressive Bornheimers.

Dresden should have won against Paderborn, but mistakes caused them a lot of pain. The guests grabbed a lead, and Dynamo reacted with furious attacks and eventually grabbed the lead, looking like a winner. But SCP struck late via a “Joker” (a late sub who comes on and scores) and the Dresden fans were stunned at missing out the first win.

Monday features struggling Düsseldorf at St.Pauli, who with a win could jump into the challenger circle. Of course, it ended in a draw, so I guess you could say they both lost…Well, actually it was a pretty well played match, with both sides playing hard. The Paulistas had the edge, but Fortuna stunned them with a counter and desperately held on. Things looked like a win for the visitors, especially when Thorandt got his ass tossed after 81 minutes. But despite being down a man, the Hamburgers surged forward and Kringe blasted in an impressive volley from 22 to earn the point.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 6

The league already seems to be splitting off at the top, as the triumvirate looks to be Dortmund, Bayern and Leverkusen. They’ve already opened a slight gap at the top, and no one else has shown any consistency to challenge.

Bayern München was impressive as they kicked Schalke’s ass in the weekend’s big match. Not too surprising, despite the build-up and Schalke’s recent return to form: The Blues have lost something like 6 straight to Bayern. The home side started brightly, but Bayern then viciously struck with a double that knocked the Schalkers silly. For all intents and purposes the match was over! In teh 2nd period, Schalke tried to get back in, with München waltzing along wasting time. Then the champions decided they had enough and kicked their hosts in the balls a couple more times to turn things into a rout.

Dortmund dropped their first points in Nürnberg, where der Club actually put perhaps their best performance of the season. FCN fought hard and showed little respect for the Neons. Superior talent gave Dortmund the lead, but Nürnberg remained in the match and eventually were rewarded with a deserved point. Borussia was still somewhat suffering from the hangover in Napoli and didn’t seem to have the iron will to win.

Leverkusen was solid, and Mainz was a disaster. Needless to say, the Aspirins ripped their hosts to shreads, getting an easy victory. Mainz defense was terrible, and their offense was hardly better in what was their worst performance of the year.

Gladbach had little trouble with Braunschweig. The home side dominated the 1st half and had things wrapped up, but obviously they had too many pints at half-time, becuase they were completely out of synch. Kudos to Braunscweig who seized the chance and got back into the match. Gladbach was able to weather the storm and then took control again, eventually ending up with a clear rout. The visitors perhaps deserved a better scoreline, but thats what happens when you’re out of your league.

A crap match in Hannover, but the 96ers did just enough to get the points against Augsburg. The fans were generally yawning, when they were not yelling at the ref for some handballs. Neither side can be too happy with their performances, but obviously Hannover gets the points, so they at least got something. Augsburg has been playing hard, but never looked like would get something out of this, unless their hosts remained asleep.

Overall, a good win for Wolfsburg, their 3rd home win in a row. Hoffenheim was a worthy opponent, and after the VWs were somewhat unforunate to fall behind, a double by Olic turned the match. However Wolfsburg then had to display an organized defense, which is something they usually struggle with. The VWs did the job, despite continual Hoffenheim pressure, and get the points.

Two struggling teams in the northern derby, and Hamburg is now in crisis, whereas Bremen has righted their ship. Werder was just a lot more clever, and after taking the lead, waited patiently as HSV ran around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.

Freiburg continues to struggle. As with their midweek Euroliga match (2-2 vs Liberec), the Breisgauer had an edge but couldn’t put the match away. Hertha came to an equalizer and did enough to earn a point.

Weird match in Stuttgart. The guests from Frankfurt jumped out stringb and grabbed a lead, but VfB fought back and soon equalized. Then there was a long period of Stuttgart “dominance”, which basically meant they passed the ball around a lot, since they couldn’t find a break in Eintracht’s solid defense. At the end, things opened up and both sides could have lost. The amazing thing is that in injury time Stuttgart’s ace Vedad Ibisevic missed a penalty, but overall the draw is a fair result.

WSV blog: Fantasy, then back to (drab) reality

Do to the internationals last week, there were few league matches.

Away from reality as WSV had a midweek “benefit” against 1. FC Köln. The 2.Liga club waved any fees so that all the money could go to help Wuppertal get back on their feet. A small, but boisterous crowd of almost 5,000 saw WSV put up a good fight – at least in the 1st half, as only a late goal by FCK had WSV down only 2-1. Second half? Not so good. The Kölners decdied to quit dicking around and new signing Patrick Helmes promptly banged in a couple to open the floodgates. WSV ended up losing 9-1 (yes, nine) in a rather embarassing scoreline, although nobody really cares as it was all for the euros…which is one of the reasons why WSV is in the 5th division in the first place…

Back to the brutal reality of the 5th division, this Sunday WSV defeated giants VfB Speldorf at home 4-2. WSV dominated the match, but wasted chances in what have turned this into a rout. Instead the Mülheim visitors managed to sneak back into the match. Luckily at least one WSV player was in the right spot, as Marvin Ellmann grabbed a hat-trick to secure the win. Some 1,825 showed up, which isn’t horrible for the 5th division, but certainly a long way from the heydays of the Zoo-Satdion packing 30,000 in to watch the likes of Bayern (or even Düsseldorf in the old second division Regionalliga!)

So far, Wuppertal has fewer matches than the other league clubs, due to some of their away matches being canceled. Overall, the new squad has not really grown together just yet, so although they are unbeaten, they haven’t really been overly impressive.

2.Liga, Round 7

Everybody sucks! That should be the battle cry for this week’s Zweite Liga.

Leaders Greuther Fürth were stunned at home by Bochum, and it was a deserved loss. The Bouchumers jumped out ot a quick lead and then hunkered down with a well organized defense. Greuther Fürth was totally incompetant and couldn’t mount anything serious, so they can’t complain about getting schooled. If they had been in the bundesliga, they probably would have lost 0-6 or something emnabrassing, leading the Fürther fans to burn down the stadium and hang the players from the nearest lamp-posts. The 2.Liga should be easier for “Bundesliga” clubs, but although you can be skimpy on skill, you really have to give effort, otherwise you could get slapped.

Union Berlin is the new leader, which is a bit of a surprise, since gthey hardly deserve it. In fact, they sucked at Ingolstadt, doing nothing, but getting a surprise goal. However the Schanzer are struggling mightily and really had no clue on what to do with the ball anyway, so Union made the goal standup for an away win and top-of-the-table. The Berliners should be happy with the points, but really need to play better if they don’t want to end up on the losing end after sucking like today.

Kaiserslautern had all the possession, but they had no clue how to break down their hosts. Sandhausen was content to kick the ball in any direction, and near the end, they actually kicked it in the net. The fans would have demanded their money back if it was in Kaiserslautern, but the villagers in Sandhausen were probably just thrilled at seeing a famous club, so they’re probably pretty happy, as SVS did fight to hold the match and were ultimately rewarded with everything.

1860 gave up a dreary draw at Aalen, mainly because they wasted some huge chances to win the match in Friedhelm Funkel’s debut as head coach.

Aue looked the better team for the whole match against Bielefeld, but were incompetant when it counted, and Arminia kicked them in the balls and robbed all the points.

St.Pauli was somewhat lucky to get the win, as FSV was the more engaged team, and certainly ran the hosts into the ground. But their finishing was crap, so Frankfurt ends up with nothing.

Düsseldorf had the edge, especially dominating the first period against Dresden, both clubs really struggling. Fortuna however figured they could rest on their laurels with the slim lead, and basically phoned it in for the 2nd period. Dynamo treid a little harder and managed to equalize late, getting a valuable point.

Paderborn looked the better side against Karlsruhe and deserved the win, and they desperately needed the points.

Monday Night saw 1. FC Köln’s most impressive 2.Liga performance since dropping down two season’s ago. The Goats faced Energie at Cottbus’ Stadion der Freundschaft, which is probably the most difficult venue in the 2.Liga. But Köln came out breathing fire, and it was the debut of last-minute signing Patrick Helmes that got things going: two touches, and a goal. Helmes has scored quite a lot of goals in both the Bundesliga and 2.Liga, but has been held back mostly by injury, although some bizarre coaching decisions at Wolfsburg under Felix Magath also contributed. In any case, a can score, and demonstrated that quickly, and then set up another. The Kölners ran rampant against a stunned Cottbus side, who never recovered.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 5

(More details after Sunday’s games)

Dortmund dominated against HSV, and looked to have things well in grip with a two goal lead. But HSV shocked the Neons with two comeback goals (despite having about two shots in the whole game) and then had the home side very nervous. However Dortmund got back in the groove and overpowered the Hamburgers, turning it into a rout afterall. The Dortmund new signings Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan have definitely made an impact, and perhaps even Lewandowski leaving could be handled. But meanwhile the Polish striker is in top form, despite Dortmund’s refusal to let him go to Bayern. For HSV the big news was the next day they fired coach Thorsten Fink’s ass…

Bayern München came out breathing fire and attacking, but somehow Hannover managed to whether the storm. The hosts began to get bored and lazy, and the 96ers even had huge chances to grab a lead. After a half-time “Pep” talk from Guardiola, the champions evidently refocused, and came out and grabbed the lead, and were in total control for the remainder.

Leverkusen got the win against Wolfsburg, but it was a struggle. The VWs showed that they were fair opponents, and things looked like they could go either way. A double by Stefan Kiessling decided the match, perhaps deserved, as the Aspirins made it count at the crucial moments.

The story in Mainz is Schalke’s debut of Kevin-Prince Boateng. He won the match with the only goal, and gave Schalke the steel that they’ve been lacking. (Jermaine Jones often gives steel, but often he stabs himself with lunatic lunges. KP has a similar reputation, so we’ll see how it goes. Nevertheless, with the pair, Schalke has some needed backbone in what is a wishy-washy side).
Mainz had a slight edge, but never really mounted anything worthwhile.

Stuttgart has recovered from their cold start, firing Labbadia certainly had something to do with that. New boss Thomas Scheider has VfB back on course. For promoted Hertha, it was a bit of a disappointment, as they really pdeserved a draw, throwing everything forward after falling behind. This was coach Jos Luhukay’s first loss in Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

Frankfurt surprised with a solid performance in kicking Bremen’s ass. Werder hardly helped themselves, as after an early deficit, Santos also got his ass tossed. However the Frankfurters looked confident and dangerous throughout the match, and when Bremen had a chance to get back in the match, GK Kevin Trapp stopped Aaron Hunt’s penalty, and it was clear that it would be Eintracht’s day.

A gritty Augsburg got a late goal against Freiburg to get the win and set a record: 3 straight wins in the Bundesliga, the Fuggers best ever. And it wasn’t undeserved, as FCA had an edge and pressure throughout the match. They have a realistic chance of surviving yet another campaign, which I’m sure nobody can beleive. Meanwhile, Freiburg is falling apart. They play attarctive football, but the talent level isn’t there. This is a common theme for the Breisgauers, where their best players leave, and the system isn’t just good enough. Then they get bounced out of the Bundesliga and have to rebound. That scenario looks to be repeating itself, unless coach Christian Streich comes up with some clever ideas.

Hoffenheim showed good organization and counterattack against Gladbach to get the win. The Hoppers gave up some control to Gladbach, but defended well and made their chances count. Gladbach simply didn’t do enough to warrant any points.

Braunschweig got their first point, but it should have been more against a lame Nürnberg. Der Club basically did nothing the whole game, rather insulting to the Braunschweigers when you think about it. The home side started timidly and ended up taking it in the shorts when one of the rare Club attacks resulted in a goal. It took a while, but Braunschweig seized control of the match and assulated the visitors goal. It was only the top form of GK Raphael Schäfer that kept FCN on top. (Well, I’m sure Braunschweig “Ladehemmung” – let’s just call it “constipation”, hehehe – had something to do with it.) Braunschweig eventually got the deserved goal, but they must realize they should have won this. No wins yet for FCN either, and if they keep playing like this, that may take a while too.
