WSV Blog: WSV Herbstmeister!

It hasn’t been a scintillating performance, but so far WSV has got the job done, or at least partially finished. The Wuppertalers started off indifferently, but eventually began to grind out points and have ended up leaders at the half-way mark. It will remain a difficult task however, as it’s “1st place or bust”, as only the champion is promoted. (Well actually, last season, the champion declined promotion for economic reasons, and FC Kray took their place as runner-up.) However glancing at eth top four contenders, it looks like any of them would gladly accept a promotion into the Regionalliga West. The 5th division Oberliga Niederrhein now takes a winterbreak until February.

WSV was unimpressive early, although the 4-0 away win at Velbert was fairly impressive. After some ho-hum results, they began to gather points, although they were hardly overwhelming the opposition. (An exception was a thumping 5-1 over defending champion Hönnepel-Niedermörmter). Marvin Ellmann and Dennis Schmidt have paced the WSV attack with 10 goals apiece.

From an attendance perspective, WSV is the clear leader, averaging almost 2,000 per home game. The league as a whole averages 385, ranging from Bocholt (528) to Oberhausen-II (156). It is therefore with a mixture of dread (because of “security”) and drool (“ka-ching” at the register) that other clubs await the arrivql of WSV. Average attendance when the Wuppertalers show up is a bit over 1,000, which is at least double what most clubs have been getting. Of course, it is pretty pathetic that WSV only draws some 2,000 for home games, but considering that they’ve sunk to the 5th division, maybe it’s fair.

2.Liga, Round 19: Winterbreak

Darmstadt underlined their strength as they battled leaders Ingolstadt to a draw.

Karlsruhe dominated against FSV Frankfurt, leaving the visitors no chance as they blasted them off the field.

Braunschweig won a hard-fought match at Heidenheim to remain on pace, and push FCH out of any prospects.

Kaiserslautern dominated afgainst Sanhausen, but the guests attempted to catenaccio their way to a point. Luckily, it didn’t pay off, and FCK scored a late goal to keep pace with the top.

Nürnberg and Greuther Fürth faced off in a local derby, with FCN having a slight edge throughout most of the match. However, it wasn’t really enough to translate into a win, so a draw seems a fair result.

St.Pauli gave new coach Ewald Lienen a huge Xmas present, a win in a critical relegation battle against Aalen. It’s not enough to lift the Hamburgers from the dropzone, but it does give them hope and certainly based on their performance, they should have a chance of recovering.

Bochum sucked and were lucky to get a draw against feeble Aue. They had no ideas and left it until the last second to salavage a point. Theeir big news was that after firing Peter Neururer, the board went out and hired Gertjan Verbeek, which makes no sense. His claim to fame is to lead Nürnberg firmly down the path of relegation from the Bundesliga. But perhaps Bochum is intending to rebuild in the 3.Liga, so therefore he might be a good choice.

Leipzig is unlikely to feature in the Bundesliga next season, despite Red Bull money. The Rasenballers demonstrated why as they basically sucked against a sucky team, 1860. I suppose thats a good thing, because the idea of RedBull buying their way up leaves a bad taste in everybody’s mouth. I suppose if they had quietly sponsored a Leipzig team instead of trying to blatantly advertise football as a sideshow, I wouldn’t mind too much. God knows that the east deserves a Bundesliga side, and Leipzig would be a good candidate. But RedBulls?, Nein, Danke.

3.Liga, Round 22: Bielefeld opens small gap

Bielefeld not only defended their lead, but have opened up a small gap at the top that puts them in a good position. Arminia dominated against a toothless Chemnitz side, which has slid into obscurity.

The huge match in Cottbus between Energie and 2nd place Münster was hard fought and somewhat nasty – Preußen manager Ralf Loose was kicked out shortly before halftime. Energie won the tight battle and move closer to the top.

A critical “chasers” battle in Dresden against Osnabrück was won by the hosts. Both clubs wanted a win to creep closer to the top, and the guests from Osnabrück were doing quite well with an early lead. But after 35 minutes Willers got his ass tossed for a nasty foul, and eventually Dynamo took control and ended up with a big win.

Duisburg disappointed against Mainz-II, as the relegation threatened side defended well and got a deserved point. This allowed Stuttgarter Kickers to claim the important 3rd spot, with a workman-like win over Großaspach.

Regensburg can’t be saved. Jahn led by two at Unterhaching, and looked to finally break out of their funk. Instead the hosts came roaring back and scored three unanswered goals to get the win, leaving Regensburg already at least 9 points off the salvation line.

Things look grim in Rostock. Hansa was kicked in the ass by neighbors Kiel and are in horrible straits. Something drastic needs to change or Hansa will sink. The Holsteiners reamin an tough opponent, and have the best defense in the league.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 17: Winterbreak, Dortmund continues to s(t)ink

The Bundesliga now goes into winterbreak until end of January…

Bremen got a huge relegation battle win over Dortmund. Werder was the underdog , and played for counterattack. The Neons once again dominated play (70% of possession), created more chances, but wasted them. And they were horrible on defense when it counted, and deservedly lose the match and will be relegated unless something dramatic happens to wake them up. In fact, the only reason they are not *dead last* is that Freiburg gave up two goals against Hannover in the dying minutes and threw away a victory!!

Mainz put up a great fight against Bayern München, even taking a rare lead. (Of course, Bayern has only conceded four goals anyway.) In the end it was a somewhat lucky win for the champions, as Arjen Robben executed the hosts at the end. Mainz is now nine games without a win, and in danger of sliding into relegation.

Wolfsburg had a hard time against Köln in a pretty equal match. They were able to pull out a win thanks to a header by veteran Naldo. This gives them a solid cushion in 2nd place.

Leverkusen dicked around and had to concede a draw to Frankfurt. The Aspirins can’t really complain though, since Eintracht had a fair share of the play, and perhaps the better chances.

Schalke was slightly better, and hit the post twice, but didn’t do enough to really threaten Hamburg, especially since they were sleeping in the first period. HSV is happy to get a point and barely keep their head above water.

Another great fighting effort, and Augsburg was rewarded with a win over Gladbach.

Paderborn got a valuable point at Stuttgart. The Westfalen were somewhat better in the 1st period, but VfB assumed control after the restart and pressed hard for a win. SCP held on for a critical point, and a very satisfying first half of a campaign.

Hoffenheim ended the year with a bang was they routed Hertha in Berlin. It wasn’t really a gala performance, but rather a case of the Hoppers watching Hertha play Keystone-Kops and completely self-destruct. All Hoffenheim had to do is wait patiently and take advantage.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 16

Midweek action in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund once again failed to win, despite sustained pressure, and got caught with their pants down on counters, failing to win yet again. Wolfsburg is looking good for 2nd place behind runaway leaders Bayern, who were pretty relaxed in their ho-hum win over Freiburg.

The most entertaining match was probably in Frankfurt, where Eintracht was getting owned by visiting Hertha Berlin. They looked dead an buried, but Alex Meier scored twice in the dying seconds to salvage a point in the wild match.

Schalke had a good win at Paderborn, who fought like rabid hyenas, but were eventually beaten down by a technically superior Schalke side.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 15: Nope, Dortmund still sucks

OMG! Dortmund really sucks! It seems like inferior sides have figured out how to win. Basically defend and wait for BVB to commit defensive hara-kiri and surrender a goal. And it works. The Neons as usual dominated play, and their strikers (no Marco Reus) can’t hit the side of a barn. So they waste a zillion opportunities and then do something stupid on defensive and lose. This time it was Neven Subotic with a hospital pass, ruining an otherwise solid performance. So this time Hertha BSC, who have been struggling, was the benficiary and get a huge win against a relegation rival. Amazing that Dortmund is in this position, but I guess they really, really miss Lewandowski. There are a couple more matches until winterbreak, and then Jürgen Klopp is going to have a month to come up with the solution. Sounds like “buy guy that can kick ball into net” might be a good idea, followed by “pay Health Insurance premiums” and “get another shrink”.

No surprise in the Bavarian clash in Augsburg. Bayern München was in no mood to be upset this time, and dominated from start to finish. The Fuggers fought a desperate rear-guard action, but the dam broke after about and hour, and Bayern then wrapped up the game viciously in a few minutes. Ho-hum. It’s getting boring. And look at Bayern’s ridiculous “Goals Against”…3. Extra ridiculous, because Manfred Neuer is usually good for at least a couple of “Neuerisms” a season where he runs around like a prat from the goal and gets punished. FCA will get back to serious work next round.

Hoffenheim and Frankfurt met in a regional derby, and it proved to be an entertaining affair. Timo Hildebrand was GK for Eintracht, having bounced around all over the place. The Hoppers had a slight edge and just seemed to want it more, as both sides displayed offensive football.

Schalke has been playing well recently, and just advanced out of Group Stage in the Champions League. Köln has been sucking. So easy win for “die Knappen“, no? Of course not, this is Schalke we’re talking about. Instead they got kicked in the balls by Köln, who deserved their win. The hosts pressed in the 1st half, but got nothing. Köln defended well, and then realized the emperor had no clothes, and jumped out quick in the 2nd half. Schalke looked tired and without ideas, and aside from a last gasp run, were basically a beaten side. Great points for Köln.

The relegation battle in Freiburg was pretty boring, all things told. Neither SCF nor Hamburg had anything, although you could argue that the Breisgauer should have got a win. Drobny stopped a penalty from Darida in the 3rd minute, which gave HSV some relief in what could have been a disaster.

A wild northern shootout in Bremen, as Werder and Hannover battled to a draw. Both sides showed strength in attack and shaky defense, so it was an entertaining match. Overall, the draw was the fair result, which really doesn’t help Werder that much.

Mainz has been slipping into the relegation zone. Stuttgart props up the league. So a dire relegation battle would be expected. Both sides had their moments, and Mainz had an edge for most of the match. However only Tobias Geis direct freekick was the reward. Stuttgart raised their game in the 2nd half and managed to escape with a valuable point.

Leverksuen and Gladbach delivered an exciting Rhein-derby that ended in a fair result. The Aspirins were slightly dominant, but Gladbach was dangerous on counters, especially since the Bayer defense was shaky at times.

2.Liga, Round 17: Halfway mark

The top clash was in Ingolstadt, where the leaders hosted Kaiserslautern. The visitors had a edge in the 1st period, but the Schanzers came out strong in the 2nd half. They took the lead, and then when Younes got his ass tossed for a 2nd yellow, they basically overpowered Kaiserslautern. Ingolstadt was already assured the mythical “Herbstmeisterschaft”, but this does put a bit of a crown on top of it. FCK is obviously still in the hunt for promotion, but this one showed who’s boss in the 2.Liga.

The Rasenballsportler from Leipzig got a big away win at Greuther Fürth, who are going nowhere. The RedBulls played a solid, if not spectacular, match. The Greuther ran around aimlessly, underlining their futile campaign so far.

Braunschweig had the edge for most of match against Union, but the Berliners held on to save a precious away point.

Bochum fired Peter Neururer and showed up in Sandhausen with interim coach frank Heinemann. Nevertheless, they remained drab and uninspired. SVS didn’t have enough skill to riase their game much, so a snoozer was the result.

Erzgebirge Aue needed a result, and they were determined to get one against Heidenheim. The Veilchen dominated the game, created lots of good chances, but wasted most of them. They were therefore duly punished and had to concede a draw in what should have been a win.

The disaster continues at 1860. The Müncheners put in a good first period against Karlsruhe, but were disorganized and flat at the restart. KSC smelled blood and decided the match in about 10 minutes. A late Lions goal was worthless, and the fans get screwed once again.

FSV Frankfurt haven’t won at home all season, and Fortuna Düsseldorf made sure their hosts would remain hapless. It was a tight game, but Fortuna was generally holding the upper hand, and when they finally scored, the Bornheimers were in trouble. Their fate was sealed when Grifo missed a penalty, and Düsseldorf took all the points, leaving FSV in serious relegation danger.

Things continue to go from bad to worse for St.Pauli. The Hamburgers hosted Darmstadt, and pre-season you would have expected St.Pauli to be fiercely attacking all the way. But things have changed, as the Kiez-kickers have totally fallen apart, and their desperate situation was evidenced as they tried to grimly hold on defensively. Instead it was promoted Darmstadt that attacked and carried the match. They got a somewhat lucky goal at the end to rob the Paulistas of the draw they hoped for and keep them firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.

Nürnberg hardly impressed, but they got the job done in Aalen to steer into safer waters. They’re not too far behind that if they get their act together in the 2nd half of the season that they couldn’t make a run at promotion. Aalen didn’t have much on offer, but were perhaps a bit unfortunate to not grab a point. They remain in dire straits, but have shown that they’re not an easy opponent.

Total attendance 114,162 (avg 12,685). Not to good, but imagine if next year you have Dortmund, Bremen and Stuttgart in the league, you’d have massive numbers, I’d bet even FSV Frankfurt would sell out!

3.Liga, Round 21: Dresden dumps Cottbus

Bielefeld has taken control of their own destiny and clearly looked like a champion as they ripped Halle on the road. The Arminen got off to a slow start, but have gradually raised their play and have to be considered one of the favorites to go up. HFC had been playing well recently, but were no match for the leaders.

Preußen Münster kept pace with a win over Stuttgart-B. The match was really never in doubt, but the mosts didn’t do enough to improve their goal difference.

The big match was in Dresden, with an eastern derby between Dynamo and Energie. It was hard-fought, and visiting Cottbus actually had the better chances. But Dresden doggedly held on and were rewarded with the lead on a counterattack. Then at the end, the drama continued, as GK Patrick Wiegers stopped Mattuschka’s penalty to preserve the Dynamo win. Both teams remain in the hunt, but this was a big win for Dresden and their large fan base.

Osnabrück defeated Chemnitz handily, who didn’t help themselves with a red card. But the game was basically in Osnabrück’s control, as Stanislav Iljutcenko put in a double to give VfL complete control.

After several crappy performances, Wehen got back on track by ripping Unterhaching.

The crisis continues in Rostock. Hansa was crushed by Erfurt in a hapless performance. The arguably most successful ex-GDR club fired coach Peter Vollmann in a desperate attempt to reboot. New boss Karsten Baumann tried several changes, but the result was horrible. RWE is back in contention with this thumper, and probably their fans enjoyed rubbing it in a bit.

Dortmund-II got a huge away win in their relegation battle. Surprisingly it was at Kiel, who have been one of the hottest teams. Indeed, the Holsteiners dominated this match, but the Dortmund Bubis grabbed the goals and stunned their hosts.

Regensburg looks like nothing can help. Jahn actually played well against Stuttgarter Kickers, and seemingly pressed for the win. But the guests were too clever and struck when they needed, leaving their hosts desolated and on a one-way ticket to the Regionalliga Bayern.

Großaspach just came up from the Bayernliga, and they would prefer not to go back. They faced off bravely against Duisburg, and it was all the Zebras could do to wrestle a point.

BUNDESLIGA, Round 14: Stuttgart, Bremen get owned…

With Bayern München already crowned champion, the most interesting battle is not for Vizemeister (runner-up), but rather who gets relegated. And this round saw a couple of traditionals get ripped to shreds

Schalke gave a big “FU” to ex-coach Huub Stevens as the Blues played one of their most impressive away displays in routing Stuttgart. The Gelsenkirchen side have been doing better recently, in large part to a couple of players that had been somewhat forgotten on the side-line: Eric Choupo-Moting and Tranquilo Barnetta. The former knocked in 3 goals, and the latter assisted on those, and in general pulled strings nicely in midfield. Stuttgart looked completely lost, running around aimlessly. They now drop to last place.

Werder Bremen is the other that got “owned”. (I must admit I never understood the slang that my kids were throwing around, but after seeing a few “Owned” videos on Youtube, I think it aptly describes what is happening to some of these clubs…). It may have been bittersweet for Werder legend Thomas Schaaf: almost 300 Bundesliga appearances as a player and almost 500 matches as head coach. One minor detail though: he’s now Frankfurt’s coach. And Eintracht gave a powerful display in the 2nd half and rolled over hapless Bremen.

A nervous struggle as Dortmund bested Hoffenheim. The Neons were desperate, having sunk to last place, and their play showed the nervousness. They generally dominated the match, with Ilkay Gündogan providing the goal early with a diving header. However despite clear advantages, they got increasingly worried as the game progressed, unable to put things away and making more mistakes. Luckily for the home side, Hoffenheim was pretty weak, and didn’t seriously challenge. In the end, a deserved win for Dortmund, perhaps getting them out of their funk.

Hamburg also got a crucial victory, against Mainz. Not a great performance, but HSV was at least respectable. Mainz is in somewhat of a crisis, as they failed to win for the 6th match in a row. They are slipping and could easily get dragged into the relegation mire.

It was another routine win for Bayern München, as constant pressure eventually cracked the opposition. This time it was Leverkusen. No question who would win, highlight is probably Frank Ribery’s 100th goal for Bayern…

Wolfsburg gets no love or respect. Let’s face, despite attractive football and a sensational title a few years ago, basically nobody really cares to watch them, relatively speaking. It’s probably their legacy as a corporate team, as everybody knows that Volkswagen called the shots. (I suppose you could say that about the city, with it’s Nazi era roots. It was founded in 1938 as “Stadt des Kraft-durch-Freude-Wagens bei Fallersleben”, so really “Wolfsburg” is quite an improvement). But although recent success has brought some interest locally, on the road nobody is overly exicited when they show up. So in what should be a real hot local derby, the Hannover stadium was not sold out.

Köln was too passive against Augsburg, and basically dicked around aimlessly, especially in the 2nd half. The Fuggers noted they had a chance, and struck right at the end to get a fine away result. In fact, they are probably the “Stealth” squad so far, as they’ve managed to sneak into 3rd!!

Total attendance 443,296 (avg 49,255), sellouts in Dortmund and München. This is I believe the top number so far this season.
