2.Liga, Round 6

The biggest news is 1. FC Köln’s continued sucking. This legendary club is not yout typical elevator or Bundesligist fallen on hard times. 3x German champion and a constant force int post-WWII German football. But this season is turning into a nightmare, from crap play, horrible finances and idiotic “fan” behaviour. The Geissböcke hoped to right the ship and another early season struggler, Union Berlin. A packed Alte Försterei witnessed a hard fought, high pace match. Both sides looked vastly improved as they desperately sought their first win. In the end, crappy defending did in the Kölners as they slump to penultimate place in the table. Huge win for Union, getting off the relegation bottom.

In a battle of contenders, Kaiserslautern hosted Hertha, and was somewhat lucky to get a draw. The Berliners look to have recovered from their slow start, and controlled most of the match, however continue to waste chances. FCK was never able to put their stamp on this hard fought and hot tempered match. (7 yellow cards in the first 3 minutes)

Cottbus stole the points in Regensburg thanks to a GK blunder at the start. Hosts Jahn totally outplayed Energie, but the Lausitzer grimly defended their lead to the bitter end. Luck and poor shooting certainly played a role, as Regensburg hit the woodwork 3 times and wasted all their opportunities. This type of grind-em-out match is what has made Cottbus go up to the Bundesliga on two occasions already, so this could be another elevator ride up…

The “Battle of Lions” in München either demonstrated that Braunschweig is legit, or once again 1860 will deceive their fans. The leaders were in firm control for much of the match, and 1860 was fortunate to equalize. EB pressed hard for the win, but at least the home side was able to stave off what would have been a disastrous defeat.

FSV Frankfurt continues their dream start, continuing to collect valuable points. Previous seasons have been relegation dogfights, so the Bornheimers certainly want every point they can get. The match with St.Pauli was basically even, but FSV was more accurate in their chances, hence another amazing win. St.Pauli will be kicking themselves for not saving a point, and almost look out of any promotion race.

Paderborn got back on track with a dominating win over Sandhausen. SCP applied pressure from the the start, and the newly promoted side cracked in the 2nd half.

Dresden’s hopes of perhaps getting into the action were ruined when Ingolstadt dropped a a bomb on them.
FCI has been tough on the road, and despite a strong Dynamo performance, deserve their win.

Aalen got their first ever 2.Liga home win, as they upended Aue and secure themselves a solid mid table position.

Oh my god, Ruhr derby between two stinkers, Duisburg and Bochum, certainly that’s what I was thinking. But actually, both clubs made a strong effort, the Zebras not really looking totally crap, and even Bochum showing that there’s some life in them. Of course, they both still suck, since they can’t score goals…thus a perfect result.

3.Liga, Round 10: change at the top

The big match was in Münster, where a sold out Adler stadion witnessed a relatively rare Westfalen derby with Bielefeld. Preussen was dominant from the start, and Arminia seemed relatively bored and paralyzed. So the Eagles took advantage and kicked their rivals in the balls and routed them.

Unterhaching is the new leader, but they struggled against last-place Dortmund II. A last second goal by Yilmaz was needed for the mini-Münchenkins to get the win.

Rostock seems to have righted the ship. They got a solid win in an eastern derby against Halle. The match started 30 minutes late, since the train of Halle supporters was delayed.

Osnabrück got back on track with an important away win in Chemnitz.

Good result for Wehen, as they were down a man against favored Heidenheim, but Mintzel scored in injury time to salvage a point. Darmstadt also put in a solid effort, getting a win against Stuttgart II.

Just when things were perhaps looking up, Karlsruhe laid an egg. KSC crashed to a home defeat against Burghausen, thrusting the home side back into relegation battle chaos.

A critical match in Babelsberg, where the Potsdamers got a huge win again flailing Aachen.

Friday Night: Franco is still dead…

“…and in further news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.”

…And 1. FC Köln still sucks!

Some interesting matches on Friday Night as the German leagues got rolling for the weekend.

In the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt continued their dream start with a 2-1 away win against Nürnberg.

The 2.Liga saw 1. FC Köln continue to stink, as they lost 1-2 at Union Berlin. 6 games without a win for the struggling ex-Bundesligist, and you’ve got to think that the situation is about to explode.
FSV Frankfurt continued their amazing start with a 2-1 win over St.Pauli, and Aalen downed Erzgebirge Aue 2-0.

(more details tomorrow)

Europa-liga: Mostly fail….

Unlike the Champions League, the Bundesliga didn’t do very well in the (basically worthless) Europa-liga group stage.

Hannover 96 had the best performance. The 96ers looked in a world of hurt as they went down 0-2 at Dutch side Twente, but managed to storm back and escape with a draw.

Leverkusen was largely crap against Ukraine’s Kharkiv. Bayer had a few chances to win, but of course wasted them. Nobody really wanted to watch this match anyway, so those that stayed away are at least happy.

Stuttgart got off to a great side against Steaua, but reverted to form quickly and stunk. They were lucky to escape with a draw.

But the prize goes to Gladbach for their utterly disgraceful performance against Limassol. They hit the post and messed up a bunch of chances. They even managed to to miss a penalty. I thought I’d never see a German Bundesliga club unable to rip the ass of some Cypriot side, but there you have it. Not to take anything away from Limassol, by all accounts they fought hard. But what’s next Gladbach, no goals against some Albanian part-timers?

FC Twente Enschede - Hannover 96 2:2 (1:0) 22,500

                     1:0 Janssen (7., Chadli)
                     2:0 Chadli (54.
                     2:1 Sobiech (67., Rausch)
                     2:2 Wisgerhof (72., owngoal, Rausch)

Bayer Leverkusen - Metalist Charkiw 0:0 (0:0) 15,322

VfB Stuttgart - Steaua Bukarest 2:2 (1:1) 17,155

                     1:0 Ibisevic (5., Hajnal)
                     1:1 Chipciu (6., Nikolic)
                     1:2 Rusescu (80., penalty, Popa)
                     2:2 Niedermeier (85., Cacau)

AEL Limassol - Borussia M'gladbach	0:0 (0:0) 10,000

Europe: Champions II

Bayern München continued the successful Bundesliga start in the Champions group stage. It was a rather blase win against Valencia, who were way too passive and defensively oriented. Bayern dominated, but only did enough to get the points.

Bayern München - FC Valencia 2:1 (1:0) 68,000

                 1:0 Schweinsteiger (38., Robben)
                 2:0 Kroos (76., Badstuber)
                 2:1 Valdez (90. + 1, Joao Pereira)

Europa: Champions

German clubs started off decently in the Group phase of the Champions League. Dortmund is in a “group of death” (Real Madrid, Man City, Ajax), and opened up with a nail-biting win over Ajax. The Borussen started brightly, but Ajax began to assert control in the 1st half. GK Roman Weidenfeller was quite busy preventing a deficit. It took a few world class saves to salvage a lucky half-time draw. In the 2nd half, the Neons were a lot better, and seized control of the match. They pressed hard and looked ready to take the lead. A huge chance was wasted as Matts Hummels missed a penalty in the 58th minute. Dortmund remained in control, but it wasn’t until the closing moments that the goal came. Lewandowski controlled the ball in the box and finished with a vicious shot, giving Dortmund a deserved, if hard fought, victory.

Schalke (in with Montpellier, Olympiakos and Arsenal) had a good start with a 2-1 away win in Piraeus. Overall, this was a good Blues victory. Both teams had some good chances that they wasted, but perhaps Schalke was a little more focused in finishing. Schalke also missed a penalty in this one.

Bayern faces off against Valencia tomorrow.

Borussia Dortmund - Ajax Amsterdam 1:0 (0:0) 65,829

                    1:0 Lewandowski (87., Piszczek)

Olympiakos Piräus - FC Schalke 04 1:2 (0:1) 30,922

                    0:1 Höwedes (41., Farfan)
                    1:1 Abdoun (58., Djebbour)
                    1:2 Huntelaar (59., Holtby)

2.Liga: Monday Night Football

The Monday Night game featured two desperate clubs, and it ended as one might expect, with a draw. However this match is more like a loss for host Köln, as they dominated play. Despite the pressure, they were unable to convert any of their chances, and end with a goose-egg. St.Pauli would have probably been happy with a draw, and they certainly didn’t do anything to deserve more.

Köln started at a furious pace, not looking at all like the club that has stunk so far. They did everything right except score. Pauli GK Tschauner was sharp however, and despite shaking, the visitors didn’t fall over. But going forward was another matter. It was 30 minutes before they even created a chance in front of Köln’s goal, from veteran Marius Ebbers, playing his 250th 2.Liga match for St.Pauli. However, the striker never got off a shot. It was only just before half that the guests even had a shot on goal, and even then it was lame. The second half was more of the same, as Köln wasted all sorts of chances to get their first win. In the end, coach Holger Stanislawski had to feel like it was a defeat rather than a point.

Next match should be critical, as Köln travels to Berlin to play also sucking Union. Something has to give there. Pauli travels again, to FSV Frankfurt.

Bundesliga, Round 3 (Sunday matches)

The Sunday matches included lots of goals, but the trend continued: Hoffenheim and Hamburg continue woth goose eggs in the point column. Eintracht Frankfurt continues their great start in their return from the 2.Liga.

The most highly anticipated match was in Frankfurt. Eintracht was no longer under stadium restriction, so it was packed to the rafters. Frankfurt has had a dream start on their Bundesliga return, but it’s been a nightmare for HSV. However, Hamburg favorite Rafael van der Vaart has returned, so the guests were hoping for a boost. Instead, it was Eintracht exploding out of the gates, with Japanese import Inui and Canadian Occean getting their first goals. HSV seemed stunned and reeling, Eintracht dominating the match. However, just before halftime, the Beef-patties got back in. The second half was more of the same, a quick Frankfurt start, but Hamburg got back sooner. Nevertheless, it was really a stronger performance by Frankfurt, and they deserved the win. Frankfurt coach Armin Veh is on record as saying that “we’re bound to get our asses kicked soon” (literary license), but 9 points out of the gate are a great way of avoiding relegation worries. Hamburg showed definite improvement, but it would have been robbery if they had secured a point. Could they go down in year 50? Well, next match is home to Dortmund, so it doesn’t get easier.

In the Breisgau, another important match. Would Hopeless-heim get back on track? Would SCF be able to get some points needed to fend off relegation? It truned into a wild shootout, although a lot was due to Hoffenheim GK Tim Wiese doing his Manuel Neuer imitation and getting caught outside his goal in wankerish fashion…flailing like a fairy on crosses. A deserved win for Freiburg, which generally looked much better. Ex-Paulista Max Kruse was involved in four of the five SCF goals, his best performance. Hoffenheim continues to look hopeless, although at least offensively they looked OK. Japanese import Takashi Usami did well, probably their best player.

SC Freiburg - 1899 Hoffenheim	5:3 (2:1) 22,800

                     0:1 Delpierre (2., Rudy)

2.Liga, Round 5

Leaders Braunschweig keep their dream start, but it wasn’t easy. Regensburg packed the box and dared the hosts to come. Eintracht pressured, but was somewhat clumsy and overbearing, and really didn’t create many chances. Kruppke’s header won the match, the large crowd finally getting something to cheer about.

Bochum actually didn’t suck, and pressured visiting 1860. The Lions actually showed nothing, so perhaps they don’t want to be a contender after all. Despite Bochum’s edge and improved performance, they have to be disappointed about not getting the win. 1860 GK Gabor Kiraly was sharp, and that was enough to ensure a draw.

Energie Cottbus and FSV Frankfurt. Top-clash? Hard to believe, but true. Both clubs are off to good starts, so the Stadion-der-Freundschaft witnessed a hard fought, albeit somewhat clumsy, struggle. FSV’s performance so far has been more suprising than Energie’s, and in a wild final 5 minutes, they looked to have won the match. However in injury time Sanogo saved the day for Energie after a wild scramble.

Of the relegated clubs, Lautern was the first to adjust to the reality of 2.Liga. They figured to have an easy time against horrible Duisburg, but it turned into a dogfight. Under new coach Kosta Runjaic, the Zebras showed vast improvement. FCK hadn’t won a home game in almost a year, and for a long period it looked like that streak would continue. However a late goal by Azaouagh gave Lautern the win, and prevented MSV from getting anything but a slight morale boost from their effort.

Hertha BSC seems to be back on track. The relegated side had been struggling, but they’re getting results now. Hertha dominated against a determined Aalen side attempting to catenaccio their way to a point. It took a while, but Hertha finally broke them down, Ramos headed in after an hour: the winner. The Colombian had been in Luhukay’s dog house for sucky play, so an important goal for him. Deserved win for Berlin, who have boosted their no.1 status in the capital….basically 10 points up on Union.

Hardfought match in Sandhausen against visiting Dresden. Draw seems a fair result.

Paderborn got back level with a win at Aue. Their first road win, and well done, considering they went down a man right after the restart. But they managed to take the lead, Hoffmann spinning and blasting a long range shot. Then SCP defended and held on. Erzgebirge tried hard to get back in, but in the end could not stave off their first home defeat.

Ingolstadt and Union Berlin had a relatively crap match, which looked to be petering out to a draw, perhaps to relief of the few fans that bothered to show. But then the Schanzer got a game winner in injury time to save the day. The Berliners are riddled with injuries, and their season is falling apart.

Monday night is a crucial match between two struggling sides….it may be season defining! 1. FC Köln has completely stunk, and St.Pauli is hardly off to a good start. A win is absolutely necessary for Köln, anything else would be a disaster. Pauli needs at least a point, but it would take a win to right the ship.

WSV: Close win on road

Wuppertal travelled to the Essen ghetto of Kray for a critical road match.

Defender Marco Neppe, who had previously played for WSV from 2007-2010, returned and was immediately inserted into the starting lineup. Christian Knappmann was once again raring to go, on the 3rd minute, his header beat the Kray keeper, but was stopped by the post. Another close shot a few minutes later on a pass from Landers. WSV looked like it was going to roll over Kray easily. However despite continued pressure and Wuppertal chances, the match went scoreless into halftime.

WSV continued their assault, and after being denied a penalty, took the lead. Boztepe crossed from the left, Knappmann headed home. 6th goal in 6 games, looks like he’s keeping last year’s 30 goal mark in view. WSV continued to dominate the match, creating several more chances, but were unable to get another goal. It turned out OK however, since Kray basically generated zilch of their own.

Not a great win, since they should have scored at least a half-dozen. But it’s a win…
