WSV: Continue the trend

Wuppertal continued their revival in the Regionalliga West, as they came away with a ruthless 3-0 away win at VfB Hüls. It wasn’t easy, but it was just the type of match a non-focused club would have lost last season. Interestingly enough, coach Bruns left 30 goal scorer Christian Knappmann out of the starting 11, not sure about that decision.

The hosts started decently, but WSV’s defense was prepared. WSV started getting stronger, and after 20 minutes, they seized the lead. Moosmayer floated in a freekick, and Andre Wiwerink out-jumped everyone to head home. The hosts reacted with new vigor, and WSV hardly created any more chances in the half. Instead, GK Christian Semmler had several excellent saves tp preserve the lead.

In the 2nd half, Hüls continued to attack furiously. The equalizer seemed inevitable. Moosmayer cleared off the line, Semmler pushed a wicked shot off the crossbar, and Mutluer managed to miss an open net from 2 yards. Luck seemed to hold, and then on a breakout, Marcel Landers (celebrating his birthday) blasted a rocket home to up the WSV lead. This was the setup that led to the knockout a few minutes later. Landers corner, Moosmayer heads on, and Knappman nods it in. Game-set-match.

Not a great performance, as certainly the hosts might have gotten something out of this. But a cold-blooded, solid performance by WSV to bring home the bacon. They needed the win, since leaders Viktoria Köln continued their perfect start, 5 for 5. The Regionalliga is the only thing happening for WSV, as the squad was eliminated in the regional Cup against FC Remscheid on Tuesday (0-1), and therefore can’t qualify for the DFB Cup next season.

We’re in the Money…

“kicker” had an article on the recent financial review of Borussia Dortmund, and as one might expect, the Neons did fairly well. Of course, doing the double and playing in the CL certainly helped. The numbers are nothing like what you might see from EPL clubs, but it’s pretty interesting nonetheless.

Overall, net profit was some 34.3 million euros (compared with last year’s 9.5 million). Overall income was up 42% to 215.2 million euros. Also impressive was a reduction in the long term debt from 56 million to only 11.4 million. Considering how Dortmund was on the verge of collapse a few years ago, this is quite good.

Overall, the annual cost for players rose about 10 million, to 60 million. Another 15 million went to administrative overhead (some 560 club employees).

The biggest gain in income was due to TV, some 60 million, almost 100% over last year. Obviously, a lot of this was Champions League money. They also had a 16% increase in sponsorship, raising the total to 57.8 million. Ticket sales were up as well, almost 4 million up to 31.4 million euros.

As result, for the first time since 2000, BVB will pay stockholders a dividend. (There is a limited flotation on the stockmarket. Not sure how it works, but I believe stockholders don’t have any voting rights – but I could be wrong. You have to join the club and become a member, so it’s still “one-man, one-vote”. Which is why you don’t see any jackass with their embezzeled funds taking over the club. Take that EPL…)

Things will continue to look rosy as the club gets a new TV contract in 2013, which should add at least 10-12 million.

Europaliga: Better results

At least the Bundesliga did OK in the Europaliga qualifiers, no Gladbach-like stinkers in the first leg. VfB Stuttgart beat Dynamo Moscow 2-0 in a somewhat ho-hum performance. 21,000 watched Stuttgart control the match, but it took two late strikes by Vedad Ibisevic to put VfB in solid position for the rematch in Moscow. From Dynamo, the most noticeable aspect was the return of Kevin Kuranyi to his old stomping grounds, as he had scored 40 goals in 99 matches for VfB, before moving to Schalke. He’s been playing in Russia since 2010.

Hannover 96 started well, with a wild 5-3 win at Slask Wroclaw. Some 25,000 in the Mijeski stadium watched a furious comeback by the Polish side, after being down 1-3. However the 96ers kept their nerves and scored a pair late to put them in the drivers seat. Goals for Hannover by Andreasen (2), Schlaudraff, Stindl and Schmiedebach. BTW, most Germans can’t find Wroclaw on the map, since they still insist on calling it Breslau…but it’s hopefully not irredentism anymore, just a frustration with the pronounciation.  “Vrotz-waff” just doesn’t seem right. But still, maybe they should just pronounce it “Rock-law” like the rest of us…I mean c’mon, it’s like it’s spelled “Raymond Luxury Yacht” but pronounced “Throat Warbler Mangrove”…

Euro-pleite: Gladbach sucks!

The 1st leg of the Champions League qualifier went horribly wrong for Borussia M’gladbach. Playing at home in front of a crowd of 45,000+ against Dynamo Kiev, Borussia went down to a disgraceful 1-3 defeat. This means that CL Group stage is virtually unreachable now, and they’ll likely have to be content with the worthless Europaliga.

And things started out brightly, as Gladbach dominated and took the lead after 13 minutes on a goal by Finnish international Alexander Ring. They had some chances to riase the league, but then commited suicide with terrible defending and got kicked in the nuts.

DFB Pokal: no more surprises

The final day of round 1 of the German Cup didn’t really have any surprises. The eastern derby was pretty much dominated by Dresden, as expected. 4th division Essen put up a great fight with 2.Liga Union. In fact, it looked like a repeat of the penalty shootout from last season. However in the 120th minute, Simon Terodde scored to allow the Berliners to sneak through. Sandhausen kicked Cottbus’ ass, but both are 2.Liga clubs, so perhaps it’s just a sign that Energie might have another hapless season. Bayern completely dominated the match against Regensburg, but the fans in the sold out Jahnstadion and the players kept things tight with some desperate defending. Eventually the favorites broke through for the ho-hum victory.

DFB Pokal: More scalps!

Once again, the German Cup shows that it’s the best Cup competition in the world. Certainly the FA-Cup is more famous, but Germany has added a feature that makes it extra exciting: the lower division club gets home advantage if facing a 1st/2nd division club. So unlike lame competitions like Spain (home and away), you get the opportunity for upsets galore. Yesterday, we witnessed the AK-47 assault on Hopeless-heim. And Sunday’s matches gave further evidence that you need to take these matches seriously if you want to advance.
Here’s some of today’s highlights:

4th division Worms dumped Hertha BSC out. Just relegated to 3.Liga Karlsruhe showed that they have some fight left as they stunned Hamburger SV. Bielefeld showed they’re not ready to concede the “Westfalen” title to local rivals Paderborn. 4th division Preußen Münster stunned Werder Bremen. American Matt Taylor nailed a hat-trick as the packed Preußenstadion went insane. 4th division TSV Havelse knocked out 1. FC Nürnberg in overtime, in fromt of an overflow crowd in their tiny stadium. And FCN should have known better: 21 years ago they got knocked out on the same field on penalties. Relegation fodder Aue bitchslapped Frankfurt. A couple of favorites, like Schalke, waltzed through, although the Saarbrücken fans were happy to see and old Bundesliga rematch. 1860 had some trouble with their 5th division opponent until they broke them down. Mainz started their match late, and having seen other Bundesligists go down, made sure that they took their opponent seriously. Düsseldorf struggled, getting a late goal to beat 3.Liga Burghausen.

DFB-Pokal: AK-47 assault!

The main round of the Cup has started, and Berlin AK-47 (OK, they’re actually AK-07, but for obvious reasons AK-47 sounds better) delivered a huge upset, as they gunned down Hoffenheim. AK-47 is a ho-hum Regionalliga club (4th division), so Hapless-heim’s defeat is probably the most disgraceful in the history of the Cup. There have been other top-flight clubs that have lost over the years – indeed it’s expected every year that someone stubs their toe – but Hopeless-heim was totally dominated and got their ass ripped. What an embarassment!! On the positive side, it is the stuff legends are made of, and the greatest match in the history of the Berliners. The only sad piece is that only wives and the players girlfriends witnessed this historic victory.

Since the DFB likes an exicting cup, the lower division teams automatically get home field advantage when paired with a Bundesliga/2.Liga club. Some choose to a larger stadium, but others simply play on their usual home field. Most of the favored clubs won, but several had to do a lot of work. Aside from the AK-47 assault, Offenbach pulled a great result as well, as they knocked out new Bundesligist Greuther Fürth.

there were of course some ho-hum matches. Dortmund scored early and basically pushed the ball around a bit in beating Bremen’s Oberneuland, who were happy to have “the biggest match in club history”. Stuttgart and Wolfsburg made sure they’d have no problems with their amateur opponents.

WSV: back on track

Another season for Germany’s most important club, Wuppertaler SV. It’s been a pretty disappointing last, er, 40 years, but that’s what football is all about, suffering for your team as they continue to suck.

Four matches have now been played in the new Regionalliga West, and after another slow start, WSV has at least got back on track with some solid victories. Of course, they’ll need a few more thumping wins before they can legitimately be considered fully recovered. With only the champion getting promoted, it’s a tough challenge. And you have to be careful not to suck too much. Five clubs get relegated this season, and if too many 3.Liga clubs drop, it will be six. Eventually, the Regionalliga West will have the German standard of 18 clubs.

On paper, WSV have a fairly decent club, and are certainly capable of challenging for the title. However, their pattern has to been to suck ridiculously at the beginning of the season and get in a hopeless position. Then when they finally start playing to potential, they’re a million points behind. We can only hope that they’ll wake up earlier this campaign.

2.Liga: Round 2

The Zweite Liga is rolling, and the big clubs are generally off to slow starts. All eyes are the relegated clubs, Köln, Kaiserslautern and Hertha. These are massive clubs, and should be expected to challenge seriously for immediate re-promotion. St.Pauli came very close last season, and figure to challenge once again. In addition, the likes of 1860, Bochum and Duisburg clearly have high expectations based on their pedigree, although they’ve been slumming the last couple of seasons.

Dark horses include clubs such as Cottbus and perhaps Dresden from the east. Paderborn is an unknown factor, having a brilliant past season, but having lost some key players and their coach in the offseason. Union Berlin will probably be mid table, and certainly looking forward to perhaps rubbing Hertha’s nose in the dirt if they can pull off some results in the derby.

Mini-clubs like promoted Sandhausen, Aalen and Regensburg, plus the likes of FSV Frankfurt and Aue figure to be struggling to stay up.

Köln struggled at home against lowly Sandhausen, and in the end gave up a late goal and split the points. Hertha did one worse as they got reemed in Frankfurt – against the minis from FSV. The Berliners had a slight edge and the lead at the half, but upon the restart Burchert got his ass red carded. From then on the Bornheimers attacked furiously and eventually overran the Hertha defenses for a nice victory.

St.Pauli was dominant against Ingolstadt, but the visitors packed the defense and played disciplined counter-attack. Despite the hosts pressing, they were too clumsy and had to be content with a draw.

Duisburg is already in panic mode. The Zebras got bitch-slapped at promoted Regensburg, mostly thanks to getting red-carded twice.

Kaiserslautern had a tough battle in Aalen, but managed to come out on top.

Bochum figures to be a challenger, but they got their asses kicked in Paderborn. VfL was completely lame, but the hosts answered some questions raised in the summer. What would happen to their weak attack now that Nick Proschwitz has wandered off to England? Well, if they get to play lame-os like Bochum, apparently there’s nothing to worry about. SCP dominated and ripped the favorites a new one…

Braunschweig is off to a nice start, although it was a lucky win in Berlin against Union. The Lions got a dubious penalty and rode that to the win. Union deserved at least a draw, but dicked around aimlessly for large periods and can’t be too stunned that they take one up the rear.

Cottbus certainly doesn’t want to repeat last season’s disaster. They dominated in an eastern derby with Aue, and easily get all the points. It’s obviously too early to tell if Energie can challenge for a promotion spot, but I wouldn’t put it past them, as they’ve managed Bundesliga promotion on two occasions. Aue looked pretty crap and clearly have some work to do.

1860 figures to contend, but haven’t set the world on fire yet. They did grab a draw at Dresden, who may be a dark horse to challenge for a top spot.

3.Liga: Round 5

The 3.Liga is off to the races, with five rounds already completed. At the top, Unterhaching and Osnabrück are out of the blocks, with a perhaps stabilized Bielefeld looking good early.

The mini Stuttgart derby ended with a thumping win for the newly promoted Kickers.

Attendance was pretty decent this round (at least for 3.Liga standards). There are several attractive venues, and even the B squads of Stuttgart and Dortmund had respectable numbers this weekend.

The 3 relegated clubs have had mixed results. Aachen was doing fine, but stubbed their toe in the battle of ex-Bundesligists, despite a large home crowd. The Tivoli still draws them in despite Alemannia’s travails. Rostock has some work to do if they want to battle for re-promotion. Karlsruhe continues the mess from the 2.Liga relegation, and have yet to win a match.

Things ghave completely gone haywire for tailend Erfurt. They certainly expected to contend, but their poor start might have already put them out. 12 points down after only 5 matches pretty much makes promotion unlikely.
